NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College field hockey team fell to No. 9 Amherst by a 7-2 decision in NESCAC action on Saturday afternoon at Silfen Field.
Amherst (6-0, NESCAC 3-0) broke a scoreless tie when Kat Mason picked up a loose ball on a failed clear and drove in through defenders before finishing in the ninth minute. The Camels, however, had a quick answer when sophomore
Bridget Mason (East Greenwich, R.I.) fired a ball in from the right corner that was one-timed in by freshman
Hannah Webster (Attleboro, Mass.). The teams ended the first deadlocked at 1-all.
After retaking the lead by capitalizing on a penalty corner, the Mammoths carried a 2-1 lead into halftime and never looked back. Even though sophomore
Kylee Quinn (Sandwich, Mass.) was able to get another marker for the Camels by converting a penalty stroke in the third quarter, the Mammoths ended the game with four answered markers to come away with the five-goal win. Beth Williamson scored a goal and set up two others down the stretch to allow the visitors to remain undefeated.
Kaitlin Broda and Sara Nidus combined for the shutout without needing to make a save for Amherst, which outshot the Camels by a 28-7 margin and had a 14-1 advantage in penalty corners. Broda picked up the victory for playing more than three quarters. Senior
Jackie Mountford (New London, N.H.) had another strong effort for the Camels by turning away nine shots. Senior
Colleen Raftery (Dover, Mass.) also made a defensive save.
Connecticut College (1-4, NESCAC 0-3) will quickly regroup and next face Hamilton on the road tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
