Men’s Soccer Comes Up Short Against Amherst

By Zach Perbeck

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Connecticut College men's soccer team fell 2-0 to Amherst on Saturday afternoon to take its first NESCAC loss of the season.

Through the first quarter of play it looked like Connecticut College and Amherst could be headed to overtime or even a tie. Both defenses were locking down the opposing offense, and shots were scarce.

It was not until the 34th minute that Amherst's Felix Wu was able to score and put the Mammoths ahead 1-0. Forward German Giammattei followed his teammate by netting a goal just a minute later to raise the score to 2-0.

Connecticut College had two chances to score within the last five minutes of the first half, but Amherst goalkeeper Bernie White was able to save both shots, and his team carried the two-goal lead into the half.

The Camels rebounded in the second half by outshooting their opponents, 6-2, but they were unable to put anything on the scoreboard. Sophomore Augie Djerdjaj (Mahopac, N.Y.) had an opportunity to score in the 56th minute, but his shot went wide of the net. Senior MT Tshuma (Magwegwe, Zimbabwe) had a chance as well, in the 85th minute, but the shot was once again saved by White as the Mammoths went on to shut out the Camels.

White was awarded the win for Amherst (5-1, NESCAC 2-1) after turning away five shots, while junior Sam Maidenberg (South Orange, N.J.) took the loss for the Camels after making four saves. Amherst edged Connecticut College in total shots by a 10-9 margin as well as corners by a 5-4 margin.

Connecticut College (3-2, NESCAC 2-1) will next travel to Clinton N.Y. tomorrow to take on Hamilton at 1:30 p.m.
