MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Junior
Camille Phelan (Medfield, Mass.) scored an equalizing marker in the third period and the deciding one in extra minutes to propel the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team to a thrilling 4-3 comeback victory over Wesleyan in overtime on Saturday evening.
Following a scoreless 19 minutes of third period action that was filled with shots, the two teams each found the back of the net in the final 60 seconds. Once Wesleyan went ahead with 50 seconds left on a marker by Rachel Ziff, Connecticut College pulled goalie
Abby Wieczorek (Winnetka, Ill.) for an extra attacker by winning the ensuing faceoff and succeeded with the move. After two initial shots were saved by Cardinal netminder Rei Halloran, Phelan buried the next with six seconds left to force overtime. The assistant captain then scored the winner at the 4:07 mark of the extra session on a 2-on-1 breakaway opportunity for her fourth point of the game to give the Camels the sudden victory.
Wesleyan (6-6, NESCAC 2-5), which never trailed in regulation, got on the scoreboard by capitalizing on a power play opportunity. Caroline Mezias took a centering pass from Brigitte Goelder-Slough and came through with a shot from the right doorstep at the 12:05 mark. The Cardinals took the one-goal lead into the first intermission.
The Camels then evened the score in the second frame when senior
Melissa Alexander (Bellingham, Mass.) potted a rebound off an initial shot attempt by Phelan from the slot. However, the Cardinals had a quick answer to regain the lead when Chiara Christie redirected a shot taken by Joyce Sun from the blue line.
Despite falling behind for the second time, Connecticut College knotted the score again with under four minutes remaining in the period. In a 2-on-1 situation, junior
Melanie Conca (Nutley, N.J.) took a pass from
Miyu Miyazaki (Chiba, Japan) and beat Halloran with a backhanded shot that landed in the right corner of the net. The teams went into the second intermission tied at 2-2 before Phelan eventually tallied a pair of goals to seal the final outcome and complete a weekend sweep.
Wieczorek earned the win by making 18 saves for Connecticut College, which nearly doubled up the Cardinals in shots on goal at 41-21. Halloran suffered the loss despite making 37 saves.
Connecticut College (6-7-2, NESCAC 2-6) will next visit Trinity for a midweek NESCAC contest on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.
