MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Connecticut College women's swimming and diving team was defeated by Wesleyan on Friday night for the first time since 2006.
The Camels traveled to Wesleyan Natatorium for what would be their last meet before the NESCAC Championships beginning on February 10. The Cardinals (6-6) put together a strong performance and were able to defeat Conn 161-137 for their first win over their conference rivals in 16 years.
Wesleyan got off to a hot start in the 200 yard medley relay by defeating the Camels' top team of
Tiernan Shea (Grafton, Mass.),
Andrea Higgins (Peabody, Mass.),
Sarah Franco (Weston, Conn.) and
Maddie Ford (Acton, Mass.). The Cardinals' relay team was able to outswim Conn by .09 seconds, setting the tone for the rest of the night.
Despite the loss, several Camels put together strong performances. Ford won all three individual events that she competed in: 50 and 100 yard free events and the 100 yard fly.
Higgins and
Vaughn Ammon (Franklin, Tenn.) finished first and second respectively in the 200 yard free topping Wesleyan's Ainsley Dodson by more than one second. Higgins followed up that win with a victory in the 200 yard fly. Ammon topped the leader board by finishing first in the 500 yard free.
Connecticut College (2-4) will be back in action at the aforementioned NESCAC Championships beginning on February 10 at Colby College.
