Griffith Nets Overtime Winner To Propel Women's Hockey Over Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Sophomore Rylie Griffith (West Hartford, Conn.) scored 1:13 into overtime to complete a 3-2 comeback victory over Williams for the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team on Sunday afternoon.

After falling behind 2-0 going into the third period, the Camels scored twice in the final 15 minutes of regulation to send the game to extra time. Melanie Conca (Nutley, N.J.) and Casey Godfrey (Redondo Beach, Calif.) were able to find the back of the net for Conn before Griffith's heroics in overtime.

The Camels started the game with a flurry of shots and prime opportunities that were stopped by Williams' goalie Chloe Heiting. But it was the Ephs (9-7, 5-6) who would strike first at the 13:18 mark when Ellia Chang sent a lead pass to Jill Parsons who was able to send it passed Camels goalie, Abby Wieczorek (Winnetka, Ill.) to make it a 1-0 game.

Less than three minutes later, Williams forward Robin Kitazono scored her 7th goal of the season after a give-and-go play with teammate Sophia Hoppe. The Ephs would lead 2-0 at the conclusion of the first period.

Conn College would have few offensive chances in the second period, only putting three shots on net. The Camels defense and Wieczorek held the Ephs scoreless despite 10 shots from the home team.

Entering the third period and facing a two-goal deficit, the Camels turned up the aggressiveness. This led to Conn's first goal at 6:18, when Conca scored on a shot that deflected off Heiting and the post before finding the back of the net. Five minutes later, Godfrey snagged a loose puck from the offensive circle and fired a shot toward Heiting who was unable to stop the puck resulting in a tie game.

Both teams exchanged scoring chances at the end of regulation, but this game was destined to go to overtime. In the extra period, the Camels completed their comeback after Griffith used a screen from Conca to find the left side of the net, scoring her first goal of the season and giving Connecticut College (5-8-1, 4-6) a crucial NESCAC win.

Wieczorek recorded 33 saves while Heiting stopped 16 shots for the Ephs.

The two teams will face off again at Williams on Monday, January 31 at 7 p.m.
