Women’s Basketball Drops NESCAC Opener To Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Connecticut College women's basketball team dropped its NESCAC opener to Colby by a 66-51 score on Friday evening.

Junior Jaycie Rojik (Scituate, Mass.) drilled a 3-pointer to open the scoring and help the Camels jump out to an 8-7 advantage, but the Mules responded with a 7-0 run which was capped by a Natalia Gonyea trifecta which was set up by Carly Christofori. The Mules ended the quarter leading by a 19-13 score, as Christofori hit a trey herself to keep the hosts ahead.

Colby stayed in control by outscoring its opponent by a 16-7 margin in the second. Taking a commanding 35-20 lead into the recess, the Mules continued an 11-0 run into the third quarter that was capped by a Nebuwa Adaobi layup. The hosts extended the margin to 22 points at 52-30 when Sophie Webb set up Gonyea for another layup, and the deficit was just too much for the Camels to overcome.

Nebuwa and Chiamaka Ubani scored 16 and 15 points, respectively, to lead the way for Colby (9-1, NESCAC 1-0). They also combined for 13 rebounds, and Ubani had three steals. Christofori came just shy of a double-double with eight points and 10 boards.

Rojik paced Connecticut College with a career-high 22 points to go along with two blocked shots. Senior Emily Tripp (Westport, Mass.) contributed 13 points, six rebounds, and three steals, while freshman Catie Donadio (Clinton, Conn.) added seven points.

Connecticut College (2-10, NESCAC 0-1) will next visit Bowdoin College tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
