Amherst Sinks Women's Soccer With Late Goals

10/18/2022 9:23:00 PM

Box Score AMHERST, Mass. - The Connecticut College women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 NESCAC matchup on the road against No. 13 Amherst on Tuesday evening at Gooding Field. The Mammoths scored two goals in the final 10 minutes to seal the victory.

Amherst (11-2 overall, 6-2 NESCAC) picked up three points with the win and are currently in second place in the conference standings. The Camels sit in the eighth spot with two games remaining before postseason play.

Conn faced an uphill battle from the start of the game. Just over two minutes in, Mammoths' midfielder Abby Schwartz delivered a through ball behind the Camels' back line to teammate Isabel Stern. Stern found herself one-on-one with Camels' keeper Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.) and tapped it into the back of the net for the first goal of the game.

For the remainder of the first half, the two teams jockeyed for field position and earned several chances on the offensive end. But Hall and Mammoths' keeper Mika Fisher recorded four saves each to hold the Amherst lead to 1-0.

The Camels came out aggressively in the second half and were able to find the equalizer in the 53rd minute. Senior Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) created space in the Mammoths defensive end, and about seven yards outside the penalty box ripped a shot with her left foot that clanged off the crossbar and into the net. The score was Johnson's fifth goal of the season and 26th of her career, moving her into third place all-time in program history.

With the game tied 1-1, both teams battled for possession, but it was the Mammoths who would capitalize in the final 10 minutes. First, a cross from an Amherst player was deflected in by a Camels' defender to give the hosts a 2-1 lead. With less than three minutes left, Amherst sealed the two-score victory on a goal by Schwartz from the middle of the penalty area.

The Mammoths have now won eight of their past nine matchups overall and have beaten Conn in four of their past five.

Hall stopped seven shots for the Camels, while Fisher made five saves for Amherst.

Connecticut College (7-5-1 overall, 3-4-1 NESCAC) will next host Bates on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 11 a.m. in a crucial conference match.
