SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Connecticut College women's volleyball team was edged 3-2 by Mt. Holyoke College on Tuesday night in non-conference action at Howard Gymnasium.
The Lyons dropped the opening set but rebounded to win by set scores of 12-25, 25-19, 25-21, 20-25 and 15-12. Madeline Barton posted a match-high 22 kills to lead Mt. Holyoke while Sadie Duffrin passed out 33 assists.
Riley Lord (Exeter, N.H.) finished with a team-high 15 kills, one of four Camels with double-digit kills on the night.
Katherine Randall (Chicago, Ill.) added a double-double of 13 kills and 14 digs while
Emma Wheeler (Meredith, N.H.) and
Christina Leduc (North Dennis, Mass.) chipped in 11 kills apiece.
Julia Dailey (Charlottesville, Va.) contributed a season-high 27 digs on the defensive end.
The Camels got off to a blistering start as Randall served for 11 straight points to begin the match. Conn produced eight kills during the stretch, five of which came off swings by Leduc. Lord also supplied five kills in the set as the visitors finished with 17 total kills and hit .394.
Mt. Holyoke bounced back to take the second set, with Barton playing a big role in the late stages. With the score tied at 17-17, she provided back-to-back kills to help the Lyons go up by three. She later added another kill to bring about set point, and then served out for the win.
Three consecutive kills by Randall gave Conn life late in the third, trimming a five-point deficit to 22-20. However, Barton provided the final two kills to put the hosts up 2-1 in the match.
The Camels flipped the script in the fourth set when, tied at 18-18, a kill by Riley provided the spark down the stretch. A service ace by Dailey later extended the lead to three, and kills by
Olivia Dow (San Anselmo, Calif.) and Wheeler closed out the set and evened the match at 2-2.
The final set was nip and tuck as both sides held early leads. With the score tied at 10-10, a kill by Barton and a pair of Conn errors gave the Lyons some cushion. Barton didn't give Conn a chance to recover, securing the final two points with kills to cap her night.
Conn College (7-13 overall) will close out the season with a home date against Tufts University on Friday, October 28 at 6 p.m.
