Men's Soccer Downs Bowdoin In Penalty Kicks To Advance To NESCAC Semifinals

Silvester stops three penalty shots to propel Camels over top-seeded Polar Bears

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Sophomore goalkeeper Peter Silvester (Smiths Parish, Bermuda) stopped three penalty kicks to propel the Connecticut College men's soccer team past top-seeded and sixth-ranked Bowdoin and into the NESCAC semifinals.

After playing to a 1-1 tie through regulation and two overtime periods, the contest was decided by the penalty kick format. Steve Yeonas (McLean, Va.), Augie Djerdjaj (Mahopac, N.Y.), and Jack Marvel (Marion, Mass.) converted each of their kicks to give the Camels the victory.

Yeonas took the first kick for the Camels and buried it right down the middle, past Bowdoin keeper, Michael Webber who dove to his right. Polar Bears senior Dylan Reid stepped up next and drilled the lone conversion for Bowdoin. After Djerdjaj made his attempt, Silvester made his first save by diving low and to his left to stop a shot from Harry Cooper.

After an attempt from Jake Creus (Rye, N.Y.) was blocked by Webber, Silvester responded by rejecting another shot in the same fashion as before, holding the Polar Bears to only one tally. Marvel then stepped up for Conn and put his attempt into the back of the net.

Down 3-1, Bowdoin needed to score to keep their hopes alive. Carlton Steinberg kicked it low and toward the middle of the net, but Silvester used his foot to bat away the shot as his teammates rushed the field to celebrate.

The game was evenly played throughout the first 110 minutes. The first half was a defensive battle with both teams struggling to gain the clear edge in momentum. Bowdoin had its best chance to get on the scoreboard at the 42:27 mark after Dylan Zane (Montego Bay, Jamaica) accidentally took down Mateo Pacelli in the Camels' box, resulting in a penalty kick for the Polar Bears. Julian Juantorena took the shot, but his attempt sailed over the crossbar and out of bounds, squandering the opportunity to take the lead.

Early on in the second half, the Camels finally did break through when Matt Scoffone (Thornton, Pa.) fought off a Bowdoin defender and delivered a through ball to Yeonas into the Polar Bears' penalty area. As Webber came out of the goal crease to stop the pass, Yeonas was able to get a soft touch on it which snuck under the body of Webber and rolled into the net for the first score of the game.

In the 67th minute, Bowdoin struck back and found the equalizer when Juantorena crossed a ball into the Camels' penalty area. The pass was deflected around the box, but it was ultimately batted into the goal by Ronaldo Cabral to tie the game at 1-1.

With less than 10 seconds remaining in regulation, Yeonas took a corner kick that nearly curled into the goal, but Webber was able to jump up and grab the attempt to preserve the tie.

With the game knotted at one, the two teams played in a pair of 10-minute overtime periods. In the first segment, Bowdoin nearly took the lead on two separate occasions. Four minutes in, Polar Bears forward Felipe Rueda Duran directed a header toward the Camels' goal. Silvester made a diving stop at the last moment to prevent the ball from finding the back of the net. Three minutes later, Minseo Bae's shot inside the box seemed destined for the net, but the Camels' keeper once again laid out to stop the attempt.

The second overtime period was once again a stalemate between the two teams, setting up Silvester's heroics.

Both goalkeepers were phenomenal throughout the contest. Silvester and Webber recorded seven saves. Both teams registered eight shots on goal and earned three corner kicks each.

With the victory, Connecticut College (7-5-4) advances to the NESCAC semifinals for the second consecutive year. The Camels will travel to second-seeded Williams on November 5 at 11 a.m. with a berth in the conference finals on the line.
