Field Hockey Falls To Amherst 3-0

AMHERST, Mass. - The Connecticut College field hockey team suffered a 3-0 loss against No. 7 Amherst College on Tuesday evening in a NESCAC matchup on the road.

Amherst improved to 7-2 overall and earned its fifth consecutive victory. Abbey Kays led the Mammoths with a goal and two assists in the contest.

Despite the loss, Sophie Moniz (Alexandria, Va.) performed well in the cage, picking up a season-high nine saves for the Camels.

Connecticut College (2-7 overall, 0-5 NESCAC), who faced its third consecutive nationally-ranked opponent, hung tough throughout the game, but could not tally a score against the Mammoths.

Amherst got on the scoreboard early when Kat Mason netted the first goal of the game at the 4:46 mark. Mason was active all game long, registering eight shots on goal. Teammate Muffie Mazambani found the back of the net eight minutes later to give the Mammoths a 2-0 lead.

Following the two early goals, the Camels defense and the strong play of Moniz held the hosts scoreless for the next two quarters and the majority of the fourth quarter.

Kays scored the final goal of the game with just under six minutes remaining to seal the three-score win for the Mammoths.

For the Camels, Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) and Sydney Cresta (Swampscott, Mass.) each registered one shot on goal. Amherst goalie Sarah Nidus stopped two shots to earn her fifth shutout of the season.

Connecticut College will travel to No. 11 Williams for a NESCAC matchup on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m.
