Men's Soccer Defeats Eastern 1-0

Cerezo Nets Game-Winner In Final Seconds Of First Half

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Marco Cerezo (Malaga, Spain) scored in the final seconds of the first half to give the Connecticut College men's soccer team a 1-0 win over Eastern Connecticut State University on a wet and windy Tuesday afternoon at Freeman Field.

With only three seconds remaining before halftime, Cerezo was able to finish a header off a corner kick from teammate Steve Yeonas (McLean, Va.). The junior defenseman positioned himself within the right side of the penalty box and placed the ball just inside the post for the lone goal of the game. For Cerezo, the game-winner was his first collegiate goal.

Despite only a one-goal differential in the score column, the Camels controlled pace and possession for almost the entirety of the game. Early on, they established ball control and pursued a relentless attack into the Warriors' zone.

The slippery conditions and high winds made it difficult for either team to accumulate many legitimate scoring opportunities, but the Camels still managed to register six shots in the first half compared to three from the Warriors.

In the second half, Conn nearly scored its second goal when Alex Robles (Reston, Va.) rocketed a shot from just outside the penalty box. Warriors keeper Dylan Pallanck was able to knock it down and as the ball trickled away, midfielder Jack Marvel (Marion, Mass.) had a great chance on a rebound shot from a few yards out, but his attempt was stopped again by Pallanck who made the fine save.

For the remainder of the contest, the Camels continued to control the midfield and had several other scoring opportunities, but each attempt proved to be unsuccessful. Despite a late push from Eastern (5-4-1 overall), Conn was able to hold off its in-state rivals and come away with the 1-0 win.

The Camel defense was outstanding from start to finish, and did not yield a single shot on goal from their opponents. Because of the stingy performance from the back line, goalkeeper Peter Silvester (Smiths Parish, Bermuda) did not get a chance to register a single save.

The 1-0 victory marked the fifth shutout in eight games for the Camels so far this season.

The Camels registered 16 shots compared to five from Eastern, and edged the Warriors in corner kicks 10 to four.

Nathan Yeich and Dylan Pallanck split time in goal for the visitors, recording five saves in total.

Connecticut College (4-2-2 overall) will next play in a pivotal weekend road series against NESCAC opponents. The Camels face off against Williams on Oct. 8, and will play Middlebury the following day.
