Men's Soccer Takes Down Williams 1-0

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Junior Matt Scoffone (Thornton, Pa.) scored in the 54th minute to propel the Connecticut College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over previously unbeaten Williams on Saturday afternoon at Cole Field.

The Ephs (4-1-5 overall, 2-1-3 NESCAC) came into the contest without a loss in conference play and had not allowed a single goal in their previous four matches. The Camels entered the game off a win over Eastern Connecticut State University.

The scoreless first half was evenly played with both teams battling for an advantage in possession. Neither squad had an abundance of scoring opportunities, but the Camels' best chance came in the 27th minute. Alessadro Horvath Diano (New Haven, Conn.) took a free kick from just outside the penalty area. The junior lobbed it into the box, and the ball was deflected toward the goalkeeper's far side. Scoffone was able to get a sliding shot off, but because of the tight angle of opportunity, the attempt caromed off the side of the net and out of bounds.

Scoffone, however, would get another chance just 14 minutes into the second half. First year Maurice Pigola (Gorlitz, Germany) possessed the ball near midfield and delivered a perfect through ball to Scoffone who raced past an Ephs defender. With only the goalie to beat, Scoffone took a shot from inside the penalty box and buried it in the bottom left corner of the net to give the Camels the 1-0 lead.

Conn continued to press the pace and nearly scored a second goal with only 15 minutes left to play. Senior Steve Yeonas (McLean, Va.) sent a strong pass in to teammate Elliot Spatz (Bellevue, Wash.) who beat the goalkeeper and fired a shot, but it clanged off the post and was cleared away by an Ephs defender.

The Camels defense held its ground for the rest of the way and sealed the one-goal victory for the visiting team.

Peter Silvester (Smiths Parish, Bermuda) was phenomenal throughout the game, recording eight saves and his second consecutive clean sheet. Keeper Ben Diffley stopped four shots for the Ephs.

Connecticut College (5-2-2 overall, 2-2-1 NESCAC) will complete its weekend slate of NESCAC opponents on Sunday against Middlebury at 2:00 p.m.
