NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's tennis team came away with a 6-1 victory over Springfield College on Thursday afternoon at the Conn College Tennis Courts.
The Camels got off to a solid start in doubles, winning two of three matches to capture the first point of the contest. Conn then went on to win five of six singles contests to secure the victory under the seven-point "Division I" format.
Conn took care of business at the top two doubles spots to grab the early 1-0 lead. The team of
Jules Taylor-Kerman (New York, N.Y.) and
Gavin Anderson (West Hartford, Conn.) set the tone with a 6-3 victory at the No. 1 position. After Springfield evened things up with a win at No. 3,
Walker Mulligan (Guilford, Conn.) and
James Serhant III (Hadley, Mass.) delivered a crucial 6-2 victory at No. 2 to nab the lone doubles point.
The Camels went up 2-0 in the match thanks to a dominant performance by Taylor-Kerman at the No. 1 singles spot. He blanked Sichen Ni in the first set and dropped only one game in the second in what proved to be a quick win.
Anderson brought home the next singles point at the No. 2 position, winning in straight sets by a 6-2, 6-2 final. The match was then decided at the No. 5 spot where Mulligan topped Zach Taub in a second-set tiebreaker. The Conn sophomore won the first three points of the tiebreaker en route to the 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) victory.
With the outcome of the match already decided, both
Andy Feldman (Newton, Mass.) and
Krishh Tipnis (Thane, India) picked up wins at the No. 4 and 6 spots, respectively. Springfield's lone point came at the No. 3 spot where Phakin Thongbooncharoen outlasted Serhant III in a back-and-forth match that featured plenty of momentum swings.
