No. 1 Middlebury Tops Field Hockey

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Top-ranked Middlebury College powered to a 10-1 victory over Connecticut College on Sunday afternoon in NESCAC field hockey action at Peter Kohn Field.

The Panthers remained unbeaten on the year at 11-0 and improved to 7-0 in conference play. Eight different players scored a goal for Middlebury, including two apiece from Grace Murphy and Hanna Medwar.

Grace LaVigne (New Milford, Conn.) came off the bench to net the lone goal for the Camels, who dropped to 2-9 overall (0-7 NESCAC). Sophie Moniz (Alexandria, Va.) finished with seven saves in goal against 34 total shots.

Middlebury piled up three goals in the first quarter and three more in the second to lead 6-0 at intermission. Murphy scored both of her goals in the half to lead the attack, which produced 22 shots and 13 penalty corners in the stanza.

The Camels trailed 8-0 in the third quarter when LaVigne notched her first career goal. Katie Dolan (Westminster, Mass.) put a shot on goal that was denied by Middlebury goalie Grace Harlan, but LaVigne cleaned up the rebound to get Conn on the scoreboard.

In the fourth quarter, Medwar tacked on her second goal with 6:27 remaining in the game. Sarah Bona added the final tally just under three minutes later, giving the Panthers their second consecutive game with double-digit goals.

Middlebury, the four-time defending national champion, extended its winning streak to 41 games. The Panthers also extended their home winning streak to 50 games.

Sunday marked Conn's fifth-straight game against a nationally-ranked opponent, and eighth overall on the season.

Conn College will next play at Colby College on Saturday, October 15 at noon.
