Men's Ice Hockey Falls To Wesleyan On The Road

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team dropped its season opener 3-0 on Friday night at Wesleyan College.

Forward Go Uemura scored twice and Colin Cobb added three assists to lead the Cardinals past their NESCAC rivals to kick off the 2022-23 campaign.

After a scoreless first period, the Camels nearly got on the scoreboard midway through the second frame. Anthony Quatieri (Peabody, Mass.) had an open look on goal, but his wrister was snuffed out by Cardinals goaltender Erik Voloshin. Following the shot attempt, Wesleyan went on the counter attack. Wiggle Kerbrat fired a shot from the point and as Uemura crashed the net, he deflected it past Conn goalie Cam Fernandez (Fairfield, Conn.) to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.

Later on in the period, Wesleyan added to its lead when Kerbrat deflected a shot from teammate Emmet Powell. The puck was redirected just over the glove of Fernandez and into the back of the net to put the Cardinals up by two scores.

In the third period, the Camels continued to pressure offensively in search of their first goal. With just over five minutes left to play, Wesleyan forward Kyle Anderson committed a major penalty to give Conn a five-minute power play. The Camels put six shots on goal during the duration of the penalty, but could not find the back of the net.

With time winding down, Conn pulled Fernandez to utilize the extra attacker. Uemura was able to capitalize on the empty net and scored his second goal of the day to seal the 3-0 victory for the Cardinals.

Despite the loss, Fernandez was outstanding between the pipes. The junior stopped 29 shots for the Camels, while Voloshin made 23 saves for the Cardinals.

Connecticut College (0-1 overall, 0-1 NESCAC) will next play Trinity on Saturday at 4 p.m. on the road.
