Women's Ice Hockey Holds Off Suffolk 2-1

NEW LONDON, Conn. The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team took down non-conference opponent Suffolk University 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Dayton Arena.

Senior Melanie Conca (Nutley, N.J.) and first year Casey Chesner (Great Falls, Va.) tallied goals for the Camels, who improve to 2-1 on the season.

Conca got the hosts going early on in the first period. At the 7:11 mark, first year Serena Seiple (Wilmette, Ill.) poked the puck out of the Camels' defensive zone to Conca in the neutral zone. The senior made a deke past a Rams defender and fired a wrister on net that zoomed by Suffolk goaltender Lily O'Neil. For Conca, the goal was her second of the season and it gave Conn the early 1-0 lead.

The Rams nearly tied the score in the second period when forward Miranda Gaudet blocked a pass and was all alone on a breakaway. Gaudet snapped a wrist shot toward Eun-Bee Huh, but the Camels' first year goaltender remained calm and smothered the puck to keep the Rams off the scoreboard.

Later in the period, Chesner scored her second goal of the season and increased the Camels lead to 2-0. The first year took the puck in the Rams defensive zone and zipped a shot from just inside the right faceoff circle. Chesner's attempt was located perfectly into the left corner of the net to put the hosts up by two with 25 minutes left to play.

In the third period, Suffolk cut the lead in half when forward Shana Cote scored on a top shelf backhander just over five minutes into the final frame. But the Camels' defensive front held strong for the rest of the game, limiting the Rams opportunities and preventing the equalizer. Suffolk utilized the extra attacker at the end of the contest, but Conn withstood the disadvantage for nearly three minutes, holding on to the 2-1 victory.

The Camels did not commit a single penalty throughout the entirety of the contest. The Rams were booked for five infractions but their penalty kill unit held Conn off the scoreboard each time. The faceoff battle was nearly dead even, with Suffolk holding a slight 25-24 edge in wins.

O'Neil stopped 26 shots for the Rams, while Huh made 15 saves for the Camels.

Connecticut College (2-1 overall, 1-1 NESCAC) will next travel to Williamstown, Mass. on Dec. 2 for a NESCAC matchup against Williams.
