Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Middlebury Edges Men's Ice Hockey 3-2

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team suffered a 3-2 setback against NESCAC foe Middlebury on Friday night at Dayton Arena. 

Panthers forward Andrej Hromic scored the game-winner with just over 10 minutes remaining in the third period to give Middlebury its first conference victory of the season.

The Camels played a solid first period, controlling the offensive tempo for most of the opening 20 minutes. Conn tallied eight shots on goal compared to two from Middlebury. With just under four minutes left in the frame, the Camels got on the scoreboard. Following a faceoff in the Panthers' defensive zone, the puck was kicked out to defenseman Sean Detloff (Harrison Township, Mich.). Just in front of the blue line, the junior fired a wrister that weaved its way past the Middlebury defense and by goaltender Jake Horoho to give Conn a 1-0 lead.

With time winding down in the period, the Panthers were assessed two minor penalties, resulting in a five-on-three advantage for the Camels. Despite several offensive opportunities for Conn, Middlebury killed off the penalties to keep it a one-goal game heading into the second. 

The Panthers came out strong to begin the middle frame. Just 45 seconds in, Paddy Bogart tied the game off a rebound in front of the Camels' net. Less than one minute later, Middlebury went on the fast break and scored its second goal of the game when Matt Myers found the back of the net on an assist from teammate Zach Whitehead.

Heading into the third period with a one goal deficit, the Camels wasted no time finding the equalizer. At the 2:39 mark, as Middlebury tried to clear the puck from its defensive zone, Camels defenseman Reid Shafer (Coppell, Texas) intercepted the puck in front of the blue line and immediately ripped a wrister that tied the game at two. The goal marked the first collegiate score for the first year.

Midway through the final stanza, on the break, Middlebury deflected a puck that found the stick of Hromic. The Panthers forward took it in stride and scored on a top shelf backhander to give his team the 3-2 lead. 

Despite pulling the goalie in the final minutes and attempting several more shots on goal, the Camels could not find the equalizer, resulting in a razor thin loss for the hosts.

Conn goaltender Cam Fernandez (Fairfield, Conn.) stopped 18 shots, while Horoho made 22 saves for the Panthers. Both teams could not take advantage of their power plays. The Camels were 0-4 on their attempts, while Middlebury was 0-3 with the man advantage.

Connecticut College (1-3 overall, 0-3 NESCAC) will look to get back on track on Saturday. The Camels take on Williams at 3 p.m. at Dayton Arena.
