Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Women's Ice Hockey Wins Wild Matchup Against UMass Boston

BOSTON, Mass.Serena Seiple (Wilmette, Ill.) and Abby Munger (Trinity, Fla.) each scored the first two goals of their collegiate careers and Melanie Conca (Nutley, N.J.) tallied three assists to lead the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team to a back-and-forth 6-4 win at UMass Boston on Tuesday evening.

The non-conference victory marked the fourth consecutive win for the surging Camels.

The Beacons started the contest as the aggressors, scoring in the opening minute when Kristen Briggs intercepted a pass at mid-ice. Earning the two-on-one against a Conn defender, Briggs dished it to teammate Emily Hansen for the game's first goal.

The Camels would answer just under seven minutes later after a faceoff in the Beacons' defensive zone. Conca (Nutley, N.J.) skated behind the net and passed the puck in front of the blue line to teammate Kate Hagness (Madison, Conn.). The sophomore found fellow defender Kiley Smith across ice who fired a slap shot on net that caromed off a Beacons player and into the net.

With the game tied 1-1, UMass Boston continued to apply the pressure. After Conn goaltender Abby Wieczorek (Winnetka, Ill.) made a save at the near post, the puck bounced into the crease where Beacons forward Isabella Brown put in the rebound goal to give the hosts the lead back midway through the first. The Beacons would carry the 2-1 advantage to the locker oom at the conclusion of the opening stanza.

In the second period, the Camels really broke the game open. First, after earning a power play following a tripping penalty on the Beacons, Conca found Seiple on a brilliant pass as the first year was cutting into the slot. Seiple beat Beacons goaltender Leah Bosch to the near post to tie the game at 2-2.

At the 17:15 mark of the second period, Conn took its first lead of the game. Claire Sammons (Naperville, Ill.) gathered a pass from Morgan Bronstein (Pittsford, N.Y.) near the left faceoff circle in Beacons territory. Sammons made two dekes and fired a low wrister that found the back of the net to the far post. The score was the first collegiate goal for the sophomore.

The Camels tacked on their third goal of the period with less than one minute remaining. Senior Kelly Matthews (Abington, Mass.) used the boards to bank a pass to herself, earning a two-on-one advantage. Matthews dished it to Munger who poked the puck in to give Conn the 4-2 lead heading into the final frame.

The third period featured even more scoring for both teams. Emma Webster scored for the Beacons to cut the Camels' lead back down to one.

Conn continued to press and earned another goal at the 13:40 mark. Once again on the powerplay, Conca found Matthews on a cross-ice pass. Matthews patiently waited and then dished it to Seiple who was at the ideal spot to sneak a shot past the Beacons goaltender and give the Camels the 5-3 lead.

But the scoring was not done there. Just four minutes later, UMass Boston decided to pull its goalie to utilize the extra attacker. The tactic paid off as Ana Gustafson put it in the back of the net to cut the lead to 5-4 with just over two minutes remaining.

With less than one minute left in regulation, the Beacons pulled its goalie once again. This time, Conn intercepted the pass and Munger fired a shot from the Camels' defensive zone that slid into the empty net sealing the 6-4 victory for the visitors.

Seiple and Munger led the Camels with two goals each, while Conca recorded a trio of assists.  Matthews also contributed to the scoring effort with a pair of assists.

Wieczorek earned the victory in goal for the Camels, making 20 saves.

Connecticut College (5-1 overall, 3-1 NESCAC) next travels to Salve Regina for a non-conference game on Friday, December 9 at 7 p.m.
