Wesleyan Tops Women's Ice Hockey In Overtime

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team fell to Wesleyan 2-1 in overtime on Monday afternoon at Spurrier-Snyder Rink.

Christina Tournas scored the game-winner on a four-on-three power play in the extra period to give the Cardinals the victory over the Camels.

The Cardinals won the rubber match in the three-game series with their inner-state foes. The two teams split conference matchups earlier in the season. Monday's contest was a rare non-conference game between NESCAC opponents.

After an evenly matched, scoreless opening period, both squads came out firing in the second frame.

Just 1:29 in, the Cardinals got on the scoreboard when Effie Tournas scored on a rebound goal past Camels' goaltender Abby Wieczorek (Winnetka, Ill.).

But the Camels would respond just over one minute later in similar fashion. First year Serena Seiple (Wilmette, Ill.) forced a turnover behind Wesleyan's net and fired a wrister that caromed off of Cardinals goaltender Rey Halloran. Senior Caroline O'Keefe (Winthrop, Mass.) gathered the rebound and took a backhanded attempt that found the back of the net to even the score at 1-1.

The visitors continued to press offensively, earning two power plays and putting 24 shots on goal in the second period alone. But Halloran withstood the heavy bombardment of shots, to keep the game tied heading into the third period.

The final stanza of regulation was even throughout. The Cardinals earned the 9-6 advantage in shots on goal, but neither team could score the game-winner and the contest would be decided in overtime.

After the Camels were booked with a hooking penalty in the early seconds of the additional frame, the Cardinals went on the attack. Wieczorek stopped two possible game-winners, but the hosts utilized their extra attacker well and Tournas was able to score off a rebound to give Wesleyan the 2-1 victory.

Conn outshot the Cardinals by a wide margin, but Halloran's play in goal kept the hosts in the game. Halloran made 40 saves, while Wieczorek stopped 17 shots for the Camels.

Connecticut College (5-2-0 overall) will be back in action on Friday, January 6 against Bowdoin at home.
