Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Third-Period Penalties Cost Men's Hockey In Loss To Amherst

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Plagued by a slew of third-period penalties, the Connecticut College men's ice hockey team dropped a NESCAC matchup to Amherst 4-1 on Friday night at Dayton Arena.

In a low-scoring contest through two periods, freshman Kei Yasuda (Nagoya, Japan) scored the lone Camels goal.

In the first period, Conn goaltender Sean Dynan (Reading, Mass.) made a couple of key saves from point-blank range to keep the game scoreless. The Camels led the Mammoths in first-period shots, but the horn would sound without a score by either team.

After an interference call sent a Camels player to the box, Amherst's Sean Wrenn was able to connect with teammate Connor McGinnis on a cross-ice pass that beat Dynan moving from one post to the other, giving Amherst the 1-0 lead five minutes into the second period.

The Camels were able to answer shortly after when Yasuda was able to punch in a loose puck on the doorstep of Amherst goalie Dan Dachille's crease, tying the score at one, 7:51 into the second frame. Despite having to go on the penalty kill to finish the second period, the home team able to keep the score tied through the end of the period.

Dynan opened the third period with a sequence of great saves, but Amherst's Mangiardi would earn a breakaway, and the forward was able to get it past the sophomore goaltender for the 2-1 third-period lead.

A physical game throughout, the third period became messy with a total of 11 penalties from both teams combined. With 10:51 left to play in the third period, Wrenn fired a wrist shot from the left face-off circle, past Dynan's reaching glove, and into the net for a Mammoths power play goal, making the lead 3-1 in favor of the visitors. Amherst capped off their victory with a fourth goal when Ben Kuzma was able to find the back of net with 6:34 remaining.

Amherst (9-9-2, 8-6-1 NESCAC) led in shots on goal 29-26, while Connecticut College (5-10-3, 4-8-2 NESCAC) won more face-offs. Both goaltenders made 25 saves, but Dynan received the loss and Dachille earned the victory for the Mammoths. The game had a staggering total of 16 penalties, eight from each team.

Connecticut College will celebrate its seniors and play Hamilton on Saturday at 3 p.m.
