WATERVILLE, Maine - The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team was shut out by NESCAC foe Colby on Friday night. The Mules blanked the Camels 3-0 behind 19 saves from Nina Prunster.
Colby (14-3-0, 10-3-0 NESCAC) utilized three third-period goals to put away Connecticut College in a late-season conference matchup. After 48 minutes of scoreless play, Mules forward Jillian Mazzocca netted the go-ahead goal that proved to be the game-winner.
In a low-scoring affair, the Camels' defense was tested early and often in the first period. The Mules peppered Conn goaltender,
Carly Denora (Verona, N.J.) with 12 shots on net compared to three for the away team. Denora was able to turn away every attempt, and senior
Kaaren Liston (Houghton, Mich.) anchored a defense that was able to kill of two penalties, to keep the contest scoreless after one period.
The second period was more evenly matched with the Camels' offense creating several opportunities that Prunster was able to stifle. Conn registered nine shots on goal, but could not find the back of the net.
In the third period, the Mules were able to break through. After a Camels penalty, Mazzocca scored on the power play at the 8:15 mark of the final frame, off assists from McKinley Karpa and Meg Rittenhouse. Colby added another goal from freshman Lily Wisniewski six minutes later. With the Camels down two with a few minutes left in the contest, Denora was pulled from the net. Colby freshman Abby Wick was able to take advantage and put in the empty-netter to seal the 3-0 win for the home team.
Despite the loss, Denora was fantastic between the pipes, ending the game with 29 saves.
Melissa Alexander (Bellingham, Mass.) was a dominant force in face-offs, winning 15 of 22.
Connecticut College (7-10-3, 3-9-0 NESCAC) will attempt to even the season series against the Mules with puck drop set for 3 p.m. on Saturday.  Â
