BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team allowed five goals in the final 16 minutes of play, and the Bowdoin Polar Bears triumphed over the Camels 5-3 on Friday night.
Connecticut College (5-13-3, 4-11-2 NESCAC) held the home team scoreless through the first 40 minutes, holding a 2-0 advantage entering the third period. But Bowdoin (7-9-4, 7-7-3 NESCAC) scored four unanswered goals to complete the improbable comeback.
The first period was evenly matched with scoring opportunities on both sides. Each team recorded seven shots on net and killed off its opponent's sole power play. The Camels were able to produce several threatening chances on net, but the period would remain scoreless after 20 minutes of play.
The Camels took a 1-0 lead 2:48 into the middle frame.
Chris Adamsons (Portland, Conn.) made a centering pass that deflected off the defender's skate and to the stick of
Eric Fournier (Lethbridge, Alberta). Fournier slid in from the left point and snuck a puck through to put Conn College on the board first.
The Camels were then again able to score about halfway through the second period when
Sean Detloff (Harrison Township, Michigan) fired a shot from the corner, through the legs of Bowdoin's goalie Alex Kozic. In the waning moments of the period, Conn goaltender
Sean Dynan (Reading, Mass.) would make a diving glove save moving from one post to the other to keep the Polar Bears shut out through the first two periods.Â
After being shut out for over 40 minutes, the Bowdoin offense came alive in the third period. Ean Small would net the first Polar Bears goal 4:07 in, but the Camels would immediately answer with a crisp one-timer fromÂ
Jack Luca (Milton, Mass.) to
Seth Stadheim (Lyme, N.H.) just 22 seconds later to make the score 3-1.
It was all Bowdoin after that. Luke Wheeler would respond with a rebound goal, tightening things at 3-2 nearly seven minutes into the final frame. Four minutes later, Polar Bears forward Patrick Callahan would intercept a Conn pass and score on an unassisted effort to tie the game.
Cam Berube gave the Polar Bears their first lead of the game two minutes later. Small won the face off on the right side and kicked the puck inside to Albert Washco. Washco sent the puck back to the right point for Berube, who wristed a clean shot into the net. The home squad would add one more when Chris Brown put in a rebound with :34 remaining to give Bowdoin a come-from-behind 5-3 win.
Kozic made 17 saves for the win and Dynan stopped 18 shots in the loss.Â
Connecticut College will wrap up the regular season at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Colby.
