BRUNSWICK, Maine - Sophomore goaltender
Sean Dynan (Reading, Mass.) stopped 35 shots and
Paul Capozzi (Lake Forest, Ill.) scored two goals to lead Connecticut College men's ice hockey to a 4-1 win over Bowdoin in the first round of the NESCAC Championships.
Entering the Friday night matchup as the tenth seed in the tournament, the Camels traveled to Brunswick to play a team that beat them twice in the regular season. Conn was able to outscore the Polar Bears to win the pivotal third matchup and move into the conference quarterfinals. In addition to Capozzi,
John Russo (South Windsor, Conn.) and
Peter Scheschareg (Arlington, Mass.) netted goals for the Camels.
In the first period, Connecticut College was able to get on the board first at 14:19 when Capozzi tapped in a cross-ice pass from teammate
Kei Yasuda (Nagoya, Japan). Just over two minutes later, the Camels would score again afterÂ
Devan Newhook (St. John's, Newfoundland) took a shot on net that Russo was able to redirect past Bowdoin goalie Alex Kozic in for the score to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
The second period was scoreless but featured excellent defense and goaltending on both sides. The Polar Bears were the busier team offensively, outshooting the Camels 19-3 in the period. But Dynan was able to make save after save to keep the hosts off the board. In the waning minutes of the second period, Conn was assessed its first penalty,  but the Camels were able to kill it off, holding on to a two-goal lead after 40 minutes of play.
Conn was able to add to their lead at 4:53 into the third period. Scheschareg fired a turnaround shot at a tough angle that snuck through the space between Kozic's pad and the post, giving the Camels a 3-0 lead.
Bowdoin got on the scoreboard with just over five minutes left to play when Joe Alexander scored for the Polar Bears cutting the lead back down to two.
But an empty net with under two minutes remaining allowed Capozzi to score his second goal of the game and sealed the victory for the Camels.
Bowdoin (8-10-4) outshot Conn 36 to 21, but Dynan's outstanding play between the pipes led to the win for the visitors.
Connecticut College (6-14-3) will continue their NESCAC playoff run in the quarterfinals at Trinity on Sunday.Â
