Camels Fall To Tufts On The Road

MEDFORD, Mass. - The Connecticut College men's basketball team dropped a NESCAC matchup on the road to Tufts 67-50.

The Camels came into the game on a three-game losing streak, looked to get back to their winning ways against the Jumbos, who were 7-2 in their previous nine contests.

The away team jumped out to an early lead after a steal and score from sophomore guard Jarron Flynn (Roslindale, MA). A series of exchanged stops and scores brought the defensive battle to 15-13 with just over eight minutes to play in the opening period.

Tufts followed up with six unanswered points from Brennan Morris to give the Jumbos what was their largest lead of the game to that point. While the Jumbos maintained a narrow lead for several more minutes of play, freshman guard Cam Schainfeld (Newton, MA) dropped in back-to-back scores, which was followed by the first of three 3-pointers for Kevin Baxter (Branford, CT) to give the Camels a 28-23 lead with just over two minutes to play in the the half.

Carrying a 31-29 lead into the break, the Camels looked to widen the margin in the opening minutes of the second half. But it was the Jumbos who got off to a hot start with a 9-2 run capped off by a 3-pointer from senior guard Will Brady.

Holding a 43-36 lead with just under 12 minutes to play, the Jumbos added on. Back to back threes from sophomore guards, Jay Dieterle and Casey McLaren sparked yet another Tufts scoring run which gave the hosts a 16-point lead with just under 5 minutes to go.

Tufts (10-9, 5-2 NESCAC) would lead by more than 20 but ultimately settled for the 17-point victory, 67-50.

The Jumbos win featured four double-digit scorers, as a double-double from All-American Luke Rogers led the way. Rogers set game highs in both scoring and rebounding with 18 and 11 respectively. Thoerner, Morris and McLaren each added 10 points for the Jumbos.

The Camels (8-9, 2-5 NESCAC) were led by the freshman duo of Andrew Hartel (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and Schainfeld as the former added 12 points and two rebounds, while the latter notched seven points and five assists.

The team also received notable contributions from sophomore Ben Rice (Hanson, MA) who hauled in a team-high eight rebounds, and Baxter, who added nine points on a perfect 3-3 shooting from behind the arc.

Connecticut College returns to play on Tuesday, February 8, when they take on Brandeis in the final non-conference game of the season.
