NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team fell to nationally-ranked Norwich 5-0 on Tuesday night.
The eighth-ranked Cadets came into Dayton Arena as winners of nine of their previous 10 games, displaying a high-powered offense that has produced the fourth-most goals in the nation. During their recent hot streak, the Cadets have outscored their opponents 61-4.
As in previous games, Norwich started fast, scoring just 2:12 into the first period. Sophomore Melianne Reynolds fired a wrister on net that snuck through the legs of Camels' goaltender Abby Wieczorek (Winnetka, Ill.) to give the Cadets a 1-0 lead.Â
Six minutes later, Reynolds would find the net once again. After stealing the puck from a Conn defender in front of the Camels' net, the sophomore chipped it over Wieczorek's glove-side shoulder to increase the lead to 2-0. Norwich was the far more active team offensively in the first, leading the Camels 12-3 in shots on goal.
The second period was more of the same for the Camels. They continued to be frustrated offensively, and on the defensive end, Norwich peppered the net with shots. After a penalty from defender Claire Sammons (Naperville, Ill.), the Cadets capitalized on the advantage. Ann-Frederique Guay scored snuck one past Wieczorek after a smooth pass from teammate Mikah Babtiste. The period would end at a 3-0 advantage for Norwich.
Norwich would add two more goals in the final period. Reynolds scored 4:46 in to complete the hat trick. Abby Chauvin would score the fifth tally for the Cadets on a short-handed goal halfway through the period.
Wieczorek stopped 24 shots for the Camels. Norwich goaltender Leocadia Clark made 12 saves for the visitors.
Connecticut College will be back in action on Friday, February 11 at Colby. Â
