NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's lacrosse team defeated Westfield State by a score of 15-7 on Wednesday evening thanks to seven goals in the final quarter of the contest.
The Camels got off to a rough start, falling behind 2-0 within the first seven minutes and remaining scoreless for the first ten minutes before freshman
Aine Downey (Brookline, Mass.) opened scoring for the Camels on what would be the first of her six goals on the day. The score remained 2-1 in favor of the Owls at the end of the first quarter. Just a minute into the second period, Connecticut College freshman
Emma Ognibene (New Canaan, Conn.) tied the game at two goals apiece in what would start a quarter full of back-and-forth scoring featuring three ties and ending in a two-goal lead for the Camels after Ognibene added two more goals within the final two minutes of the half.
The third quarter was rather quiet for both teams with Westfield State adding one score and Downey adding another goal for the Camels along with junior
Emily Yorns (Longmeadow, Mass.) to extend the lead to a three-goal margin. The fourth quarter is where the Camels finally pulled away for good, with Yorns adding two more goals to her total for the day and Downey scoring four more times to bring her total to six for the evening. A Westfield State goal with just under two minutes to play brought the lead down to 8 but at that point the game was too far gone for the Owls to mount a comeback.
Sophomore
Violette Nidds (Ridgewood, N.J.) earned the win for the Camels, making 10 saves on 17 attempts. Kara Banagan took the loss for the visiting Owls despite making 13 saves on the day.
Connecticut College (4-2, NESCAC 0-2) will next host Williams College on Friday, March 25
th at 5:00 p.m. as the Camels search for their first NESCAC victory of the season.
