Men's Lacrosse Defeats Crosstown Rival Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Junior Jared Rainville (Watertown, Conn.) scored five goals and added an assist to help the Connecticut College men's lacrosse team down Coast Guard 19-12 on Tuesday night at Silfen Field. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Camels and secured the first victory against their cross-road rival since 2018.

After a scoreless first 10 minutes of the contest, Connecticut College struck first with a JJ Ford (Clinton, Conn.) goal to get on the scoreboard. Coast Guard quickly answered with three straight goals with 4:13 left to play in the opening frame. Rainville and freshman Aidan McAvoy (Charlotte, N.C.) found the back of the net to tie the game at three, but the Bears would score once more to lead 4-3 after 15 minutes of play.

Trailing by one, the Camels put together a strong second quarter which would determine the outcome of the game. The home team outscored Coast Guard 6-0 including three more goals from Rainville. Senior captain Nick Farnham (Falmouth, Maine) added two scores, and sophomore Jack Tenzer (Charlotte, N.C.) tallied one with 44 seconds left in the half, to give the Camels a 9-4 lead at the break.

Junior Gus Mazzocca (West Hartford, Conn.) continued the scoring spree to open up the third quarter off an assist from Farnham. Coast Guard responded with two goals, but the Camels would match them and keep their five-goal lead at 12-7 with one quarter remaining.

The final frame was extremely high-scoring with 12 total goals between the two teams. Rainville added his fifth during the quarter, and Mazzocca would score his second to increase the lead to seven. Both teams traded goals back and forth, but when it was all said and done, the Camels were the victors by a score of 19-12.

Freshman defender Gus Williams (Guilford, Vt.) scored from his knees after nearly taking the ball the length of the field. It was the first career goal for the freshman.

Farnham led the Camels in total points with seven on three goals and four assists and McAvoy secured the hat trick for the home team. For Coast Guard, Caleb Holdridge led the team with five goals and two assists.

Sophomore Will Rice (New Rochelle, N.Y.) picked up the win for Conn and stopped 13 shots in goal.

Connecticut College will play Bowdoin on Saturday, April 23 and will honor its seniors in a pre-game ceremony.
