NEW LONDON, Conn. - Senior
Nick Farnham (Falmouth, Maine) scored twice within the last 38 seconds of regulation to tie the game at six goals apiece and send the game to overtime. A goal from freshman
JJ Ford (Clinton, Conn.) gave the Camels the 7-6 victory under a minute into the first overtime period.
The entire game was a defensive battle as both teams had few opportunities to score thanks to strong defenses as well as solid performances from both goalkeepers. The first half was especially low scoring, with the Camels and Bantams exchanging goals at the nine- and eight-minute marks before Trinity pulled ahead by a goal following a Luke Valentino score with three minutes remaining. Early in the second quarter, Conn College freshman
Patrick Atkins (Topsfield, Mass.) tied the game up once again by getting the ball past Trinity goalkeeper Cooper Yaccino to even the score at two goals apiece. After one more Trinity goal, the Bantams entered the half tied at one goal apiece in what was shaping up to be yet another NESCAC thriller for the Camels.
The second half was much of the same with scoring chances coming few and far between for both teams as the defenses held strong and limited quality looks. The Camels tied the game up again halfway through the third quarter before Trinity's Connor McCulloch scored twice within a 20 second span to give the Bantams a two-score lead. Ford scored his first goal of the game at the beginning of the fourth quarter to bring the lead back to just one for the Bantams. McCulloch answered again minutes later to re-establish a two-goal cushion for Trinity that would hold until less than a minute remained in the game. With time running out, Farnham took it upon himself to even the game. Coming out of a timeout, he tallied his first score of the game with 35 seconds remaining to bring the team within a goal and make the ensuing face off the most important of the game. After a face off violation on Trinity that awarded Connecticut College with possession, Farnham picked up the ground ball and made his way downfield to make the game-tying score with just eight seconds remaining which would send the game to overtime.
In the extra period, Connecticut College junior
Jack Venturelli (Duxbury, Mass.) won the ground ball after a face off to give the Camels the first opportunity to score. Junior
Gus Mazzocca (West Hartford, Conn.) found Ford, who was able to fire a long-distance shot into the net to secure the victory for the Camels and give the team its third NESCAC victory of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Will Rice (New Rochelle, N.Y.) earned the win for the Camels after making 18 saves throughout the contest. Yaccino made 13 saves for Trinity in the losing effort.
Connecticut College (4-3, NESCAC 3-2) will travel to Medford, Mass. on Saturday to take on Tufts in another NESCAC matchup.
