NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College field hockey team suffered a 4-0 setback against No. 13 Bowdoin College on Saturday afternoon in NESCAC action at Silfen Field.
Bowdoin improved to 3-1 overall and earned its first conference victory of the season. Jill Cloonan (Woburn, Mass.) led the Polar Bears with a goal and an assist in the contest.
Sophie Moniz (Alexandria, Va.) had a busy day in the cage for the Camels, finishing with a season-high seven saves.
The Polar Bears notched the only goal of the first half off a penalty corner with 1:10 remaining in the opening quarter. Following the insertion, Maya Malenfant (Weston, Mass.) hit a shot to the cage that was redirected by Cloonan for the game's first goal.
The Conn defense did well to keep the deficit to a single goal by intermission. Bowdoin held a 9-1 edge in shots and a 5-0 advantage in corners for the half, but only managed the one goal.
The Polar Bears added their second tally just 10 minutes into the second half. Sophia Rutman (Chappaqua, N.Y.) fed a pass from the broken circle that was tipped up by Sophia Rosati (Newburyport, Mass.), and the shot sailed over Moniz's shoulder and into the back of the cage.
Nearly three minutes later, Bowdoin added to the margin once again, this time off the stick of Faith Jennings (Ghent, N.Y.). The play began when the Polar Bears played a long ball into the circle that was kicked out by Moniz. Unfortunately for the Camels, the loose ball went right to Jennings, who dribbled back into the circle and flicked a shot past Moniz.
Moniz made a pair of kick saves to start the fourth quarter, but Bowdoin tacked on its fourth and final goal just two minutes in. Cloonan set up the score with a nifty wraparound pass to Hanna Wurdack (St. Louis, Mo.), who was camped out near the far post and had a clear look at the goal.
Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) and
Elektra Rodger (Greenwich, Conn.) combined for three shots on goal for the Camels. Bowdoin goalie Julie Arsenault (Rowayton, Conn.) made three saves to post her first shutout of the season.
Conn College (1-3 overall, 0-2 NESCAC) will next host Smith College on Tuesday, September 20 at 7 p.m.
