NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College field hockey team used a big fourth quarter to race past Smith College, 4-1, Tuesday night in non-conference action at Silfen Field.
The Camels broke a 1-1 stalemate with three goals in the final 15 minutes of the contest.
Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) accounted for a pair of goals in the period, and
Kylee Quinn (Sandwich, Mass.) added her second tally of the game.
Conn College improved to 2-3 on the season and has won the last five meetings between the two schools. Smith dropped to 2-5 overall.
The Camels jumped on the scoreboard in the final minute of the first quarter off a penalty corner.
McKalynn Jacobsen (Fairfield, Conn.) took the insertion from
Abby Krahmer (Duxbury, Mass.) and laid out a pass to the right side of the circle for Quinn, who buried a blast just inside the right post.
Conn's 1-0 lead lasted until late in the second half, when Smith tied the game on a goal by Laura Dreher (Durham, N.C.). She dribbled into the circle and rocketed a ball to the front of the goal, where it deflected off the goalie and up under the crossbar.
After a scoreless third quarter, Conn turned up the heat on the offensive end to start the fourth. The Camels scored a pair of goals in a span of 87 seconds, both off of penalty corners. The first came less than two minutes into the period when McGann redirected a ball from Quinn into the back of the cage for the go-ahead score. Moments later, Quinn notched her second goal of the night on a blast from the top of the circle off the insertion by Krahmer.
Conn's final goal of the night came on a spectacular individual effort by McGann, who collected a pass at the midfield stripe and dribbled her way down the middle of the field. After getting by the final Smith defender, McGann juked the goalie and scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season into an open net.
Conn goalie
Sophie Moniz (Alexandria, Va.) faced only three shots on goal and recorded a pair of saves. Smith goalie Rory Harper (Wayne, Pa.) finished with 11 saves on the night.
Much like Conn, Smith entered the game having faced a slew of nationally-ranked opponents. The Pioneers took on four top-25 teams in the first two weeks of the season, and were outscored by an 18-2 margin in those games.
Conn College will next host Ramapo College on Saturday, September 24 at 2 p.m.
