NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College field hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to Ramapo College on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference clash at Silfen Field.
The Roadrunners (6-2 overall) scored a pair of goals in the first half and held on in the second to win the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Chloe Heller (Livingston, N.J.) and Mariah Tovar (Totowa, N.J.) each recorded goals in the victory, and goalie Michelle Kukan (Clark, N.J.) finished with seven saves to make the margin stand.
Abby Ragland (Westport, Conn.) notched her first career goal late in the second half to give the Camels life.
Sophie Moniz (Alexandria, Va.) made five stops in goal to keep Conn within striking distance.
Ramapo scored the game's first goal off a short corner with 5:33 left in the opening quarter. After the Roadrunners moved the ball around the outside of the circle, Victoria Docherty (Newton, N.J.) put a shot on goal that Moniz stopped. However, Heller was on the doorstep to clean up the rebound for her first goal of the season.
The Roadrunners added the second goal just 1:36 before the halftime intermission. Maggie Farrell (Millington, N.J.) intercepted a 16-yard hit and dribbled into the circle before unleashing a shot on goal. Once again, Moniz was there to make the initial save, but Tovar knocked in the rebound to give the visitors a 2-0 lead going into the break.
The Camels responded in the third quarter by dominating possession and keeping play locked in their offensive half. Conn earned three penalty quarters and outshot Ramapo 6-0 in the stanza, but ultimately failed to make up any ground.
Conn's hard work finally paid off with 9:03 left in the match, as
Chloe Therrien (Boxford, Mass.) took a pass on the right wing and dribbled into the circle. After drawing her defender to the end line, Therrien reversed field and passed off to Ragland, who slipped a one-timer by Kukan to cut the deficit to one.
The Camels never got a chance to equalize, as Ramapo kept the ball out of its defensive zone and was content to watch the clock wind down. The Roadrunners ended the game with an 8-6 edge in penalty corners while the Camels owned an 18-12 advantage in shots.
Conn College (2-4 overall) will next host Trinity College on Tuesday, September 27 at 6 p.m.
