NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Johnson & Wales University on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at Freeman Field.
Jordan Restivo (Utica, N.Y.) had a hand in both scores, finishing with a goal and an assist to lead the Wildcats (7-2-1 overall). The JWU defense also did its part, limiting the Camels to only one shot on goal in the contest.
Restivo proved to be a problem for the Camels in the first half, using her speed to make multiple dangerous runs up the left sideline. In the 26th minute, she tracked down a ball on the wing and sent a left-footed centering pass into the box, where MacKenna Renauld (Cranston, R.I.) was waiting to finish it off for the first goal of the contest.
Just over 10 minutes later, Restivo once again made her presence known. After Hayley Viebrock (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) sprung her open on the left side of the box, Restivo tried another centering pass that deflected off a Conn defender. However, she stayed with the play and drilled the loose ball into the side netting for her team-leading ninth goal of the year.
The Wildcats took the 2-0 lead into intermission and held a 5-4 edge in shots at the break. More importantly, JWU didn't allow a shot on goal in the opening frame.
In the second half, Conn defender
Sarah Hobbs (Kansas City, Mo.) was charged with marking Restivo, and she did well to neutralize one of the nation's top scorers. The two battled throughout the final 45 minutes, but Hobbs didn't allow the JWU sniper another shot on goal.
The Camels produced three corner kicks in the second half but couldn't capitalize. Conn's lone shot on goal came in the 82nd minute off the foot of
Camille Cortes (Annandale, Va.), but JWU keeper Carly McCrumb (Grandville, Mich.) was there to make the stop. The shutout was McCrumb's fourth of the season.
Conn goalkeeper
Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.) played the entire 90 minutes and finished with two saves.
Conn College (4-2-1 overall) will next host Hamilton College on Saturday, October 1 at 11:30 a.m.
