Hamilton Wins Back-And-Forth Contest Against Men's Ice Hockey

NEW LONDON, Conn. – In a tense back-and-forth game, the Connecticut College men's ice hockey team came up just short to Hamilton on Friday night at Dayton Arena. The Continentals downed the Camels 4-3 on a third period goal from Ben Zimmerman.

Hamilton's success came from its power play unit. The Continentals converted with the man-advantage on three separate occasions.

Fred Allaire got the visitors on the board in the first period, zipping a wrister by Camels goaltender Sean Dynan (Reading, Mass.). Despite the 1-0 deficit, Conn outshot the Continentals 7-3 in the opening stanza.

After a display of fine defensive play in the first, both offenses came alive in the second period. Following penalties on both teams, first year Rocco Testa-Basi (Holland Patent, N.Y.) tied the game for the hosts on the four-on-four opportunity. Testa-Basi skated into the attacking zone, contested by a Continentals defender. The first year glided into the slot, dragged the puck along the ice and skillfully lifted it into the upper right portion of the goal to even the score at 1-1.

Hamilton answered just 44 seconds later when Nick Hawkins scored an unassisted goal on the power play.

At the 6:19 mark, Conn was able to tie the score once again. John Russo (South Windsor, Conn.) collected a loose puck that drifted into the slot. The sophomore fired a top shelf wrist shot to give the Camels their second goal of the game.

Not to be outdone, midway through the period, the Continentals regained the lead on another power play goal. Carson Hall scored for the visitors to make it a 3-2 advantage.

Despite falling behind for the third time in the game, the Camels showed their resiliency. Seth Stadheim (Lyme, N.H.) forced a turnover in the Hamilton defensive zone. He skated into the slot and delivered a near-post wrister past Continentals goaltender Jack Grant. Stadheim's goal ended a wild scoring barrage in the second that featured five goals. The two teams were tied at three heading into the second intermission.

Just under four minutes into the final frame, Hamilton scored what would be the game-winner. At the left face off circle, Zimmerman took a low shot toward Dynan. The Camels goaltender was screened during the attempt, and the puck found the back of the net to give the Continentals the 4-3 lead.

For the remainder of the game, the Camels tried to find the equalizer. The hosts had several good looks, but Grant was able to turn away each shot and seal the one-goal victory.

Grant picked up the victory for Hamilton (7-6 overall, 5-3 NESCAC), turning away 34 shots including 14 in the final period alone. Dynan and first year Kellen Beauton (Colchester, Conn.) split time in net for Conn, stopping 17 shots collectively.

The Camels dominated the face off battle, winning an impressive 59 percent of chances. Hamilton's penalty kill unit was the difference in the contest, stifling all four power play opportunities for Conn.

Connecticut College (2-10 overall, 0-7 NESCAC) will return to action on Saturday at home against Amherst. Action begins at 3 p.m. at Dayton Arena.
