Amherst Edges Men's Ice Hockey 4-3

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team suffered a 4-3 setback against Amherst on Saturday afternoon at Dayton Arena.

The Camels held a 2-1 lead heading into the third period, but the Mammoths scored three times in the final 20 minutes to secure a NESCAC-leading seventh conference victory.

After a back-and-forth beginning to the contest, Amherst scored first off a rebound goal from Zach Murray at the 15:04 mark.

Just two minutes later the Camels answered with a score of their own. Steven Ardagna (Roswell, Ga.) started the counter attack from the Conn defensive end, sending a stretch pass just in front of the blue line to teammate John Russo (South WIndsor, Conn.). Russo skated up and delivered a perfect low wrister to the far post, beating Mammoths goaltender Alex Wisco to tie the game at 1-1.

In the second period, the Camels showcased a tremendous defensive effort. They held Amherst to only four shots on goal and killed off two penalties including a five-on-three advantage for the Mammoths.

With less than three minutes left in the period, Conn took its first lead of the game. First year Kareem Alazem (Washington, D.C.) fired a wrist shot on net. The attempt was saved by Wisco, but Alazem collected his own rebound and scored on the second effort. The goal marked the first collegiate score for Alazem and put the Camels up 2-1 heading into the third period.

In the final frame, the Mammoths took advantage of several opportunities. Following a five-minute major penalty on Cole Eichler (King, Ontario), Amherst capitalized on the man-advantage on a goal by Ryan Tucker. Just four minutes later, after another Conn infraction, Michael Pitts scored a rebound goal on the power play to give Amherst the 3-2 lead.

Under one minute later, Pitts came through again for the Mammoths, scoring off his own face off in the Conn defensive zone to increase the lead to 4-2.

With time winding down, the Camels pulled goaltender Kellen Beauton (Colchester, Conn.) to utilize the extra attacker. The strategy paid off. Following a face off win by Russo in the Amherst defensive zone, the sophomore kicked it back to Anthony Quatieri (Peabody, Mass.) who fired a quick wrist shot that found the back of the net to put the Camels back within one goal.

Conn quickly regained possession following the ensuing face off and frantically attempted to tie the game, but a pair of shots went wide of the net as time ran out in the period.

With the victory, Amherst (9-3-2 overall, 7-1 NESCAC) holds a two game lead atop the NESCAC standings. Wisco earned the victory for the Mammoths, stopping 15 shots. Beauton made 18 saves for the Camels.

Russo factored into two of Conn's goals, tallying one score and one assist.

Connecticut College (2-11 overall, 0-8 NESCAC) will be back in action at home on Friday, Jan. 20 against Wesleyan.
