Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men's Ice Hockey Edged By Wesleyan 2-1

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team fell to Wesleyan 2-1 on Friday night at Dayton Arena.

Liam Donelan scored the game-winner in the second period to give the Cardinals their sixth conference victory and 10th win overall. The defeat marks the fourth straight one-goal loss for the Camels.

Wesleyan (10-2-2 overall, 6-1-2 NESCAC) struck first on the scoreboard at the 9:46 mark in the opening period. As a Camels defender attempted to clear a shot from the defensive zone, the puck trickled into the slot where Cardinals forward Henry Carlson was waiting. The Wesleyan sophomore had a wide open look on the net and beat goaltender Cam Fernandez (Fairfield, Conn.) who had no chance on the impossible save.

Just over three minutes later, Conn tied the game. Rocco Testa-Basi (Holland Patent, N.Y.) corralled a loose puck in the attacking zones on the boards. The first year dished it to teammate Michael DiMascolo (Cranston, R.I.) who completed the one-timer with a rocketed top shelf slap shot to even the score at 1-1. The Camels outshot the Cardinals 14-6 throughout the first 20 minutes.

In the second period, the Cardinals regained the lead just over eight minutes in when Donelan's slap shot from inside the blue line found the back of the net. Wesleyan had a chance to extend its advantage following back-to-back minor infractions on the Camels. But Conn's penalty kill unit was outstanding, defusing the two-man disadvantage without allowing a single shot on goal. Wesleyan would carry the 2-1 lead heading into the final stanza.

For the final 20 minutes, the two teams battled for an offensive edge. Despite opportunities on both sides, the squads held each other off the scoreboard. The Camels' best chance came in the waning moments following a penalty on the Cardinals. The hosts pulled Fernandez from net to utilize the six-on-four advantage. Testa-Basi fired a wrister from the slot, but Cardinals goaltender Erik Voloshin smothered it to seal the 2-1 victory for the visitors.

Conn held the advantage in several offensive categories throughout the course of the game. The Camels outshot the Cardinals 30-25 and won over 60 percent of face-offs. Both teams displayed effective penalty kill units, stopping three power plays each.

Fernandez made 23 saves for Conn, while Voloshin stopped 29 shots for Wesleyan.

Connecticut College (2-12 overall, 0-9 NESCAC) will return to action on Saturday at Dayton Arena against Trinity.
