Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Trinity Downs Men's Ice Hockey 2-0

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision to Trinity on Saturday afternoon at Dayton Arena.

With the victory, Trinity (11-5 overall, 8-2 NESCAC) has now won seven straight games and the Bantams have not lost a game in 2023. Conn is in search of its first NESCAC win, although the margin of defeat has been narrow throughout the course of the season.

The Bantams were able to get on the scoreboard midway through the first period when Jacob Borgida slung a wrist shot by goaltender Cam Fernandez (Fairfield, Conn.). The visitors had a chance to increase their lead, going on the power play twice during the opening stanza, but the Camels killed off both attempts to hold the deficit to one heading into the second period.

In the middle frame, the Camels once again played short-handed, committing a pair of minor infractions. But the penalty kill unit did its job, stopping both power play tries for the Bantams.

At the 15:39 mark, Trinity scored its second goal of the game in controversial fashion. After Bantams forward Christian Hayes gathered the puck on the boards in the Camels defensive zone, he made a centering pass into the slot to teammate Gerard Maretta. Maretta was able to nudge the puck into the net, although several Conn players protested that the Bantams forward illegally used his hand to score. After a conference between the officials, the ruling was upheld and Trinity carried the 2-0 lead into the third. The Bantams held the distinct advantage in second period offense, outshooting the Camels 11-3.

Trinity continued to stifle any offensive opportunities for Conn, limiting them to only seven shots in the third period and secured the 2-0 victory in the process.

Bantams goaltender Devon Bobak recorded his third shutout of the season, tallying 17 saves. Despite the loss, Fernandez was outstanding throughout, registering a season-high 30 saves for the Camels.

Connecticut College (2-13 overall, 0-10 NESCAC) will return to action on Friday, January 27 at Middlebury.
