Men's Ice Hockey Suffers 5-1 Setback Against Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team dropped a NESCAC matchup to Middlebury 5-1 on Friday night at Chip Kenyon Arena.

The Panthers scored four goals in the third period – including three in the final five minutes – to hand the Camels the tough loss on the road.

Midway through the first frame, the Panthers scored the game's opening goal. Forward Jin Lee utilized his speed to outskate the defense and get a shot on Camels goaltender Cam Fernandez (Fairfield, Conn.). Fernandez made the pad save, but the rebound caromed to a streaking Wyatt Pastor who scored off the slap shot to give Middlebury the 1-0 lead.

In the second period, the Camels offense was extremely active. The visitors earned two power plays and fired 20 shots on goal, but Panthers goaltender Jake Horoho stopped every attempt to keep Conn off the scoreboard and maintain the 1-0 lead heading into the final frame.

The final stanza was action-packed, with five of the game's six goals occurring in the last 14 minutes. Zach Whitehead added to the Panthers lead with a goal on the power play at the 7:22 mark.

Just under three minutes later, the Camels struck back with a power play goal of their own. Brett Moccia (Lake Forest, Ill.) tallied his fourth goal of the season off an assist from Steven Ardagna (Roswell, Ga.).

Middlebury regained its two-goal lead at 15:19 when Cole Joslin tapped in a rebound while on the power play. The Panthers added an empty net goal with just over one minute remaining. The scoring frenzy was capped off by Whitehead's second score of the game to seal the 5-1 victory for the hosts.

Horoho earned the win for the Panthers, recording a season-best 40 saves. Fernandez stopped 30 shots for the Camels.

Connecticut College (2-14-0 overall, 0-11 NESCAC) will next travel to Williams for a NESCAC matchup on Saturday, January 28.
