No. 4 Amherst Downs No. 14 Women's Ice Hockey

AMHERST, Mass. – The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team dropped a NESCAC matchup to No. 4 Amherst on Friday night on the road. The Mammoths downed the Camels 3-0 to move into sole possession of first place in the conference standings.

Coming into Friday's contest, the Camels and the Mammoths had identical 5-1 records against NESCAC opponents. Both teams landed in the top-15 in the latest United States College Hockey Online (USCHO) poll.

After a scoreless opening 14 minutes, Amherst (12-1 overall, 6-1 NESCAC) got on the scoreboard twice in the latter half of the first period. Kate Pohl gave the Mammoths the 1-0 lead on a wrist shot that beat goaltender Abby Wieczorek (Winnetka, Ill.). Pohl's goal was her eighth on the season, tied for the conference lead.

With eight seconds remaining in the period, Leslie Schwartz doubled up the hosts' lead with a goal off assists from teammates Anna Baxter and Marie-Eve Marleau. The Mammoths showcased stifling defensive effort in the first, holding the Camels to only two shots on goal.

Midway through the middle frame, Baxter extended the Amherst lead to 3-0, scoring on the power play. Despite the change on the scoreboard, the Camels played well in the second, registering eight shots on goal.

Amherst limited the Camels' offensive opportunities during the final 20 minutes of play, holding the visitors off the scoreboard to seal the 3-0 victory. Conn was shut out for only the second time this season.

Wieczorek stopped 24 shots for the Camels. Natalie Stott made 17 for the Mammoths. Amherst had major success in the face off battle, winning an impressive 72 percent of chances. With the victory, Amherst sits atop the NESCAC standings, one game ahead of the Camels.

Connecticut College (7-3 overall, 5-2 NESCAC) will wrap up the weekend series against Amherst on Saturday. Action begins at 3 p.m.
