Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Trinity Clips Women's Ice Hockey In OT

HARTFORD, Conn. -- After a scoreless 60 minutes of regulation, Trinity senior Stephanie Nevers scored 1:14 into overtime to give the Bantams a 1-0 win over the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team on Friday night at Koeppel Community Sports Center.

The win marked the first conference victory for the Bantams, while the Camels have dropped three straight NESCAC games after starting the season 5-1.

Throughout the entirety of the contest, both teams struggled to break through on the scoreboard. The game was highlighted by the strong play of Camels goaltender Abby Wieczorek (Winnetka, Ill.) and Trinity goalie Hannah Leclair.

After a scoreless first period, the Bantams picked up the pace in the second, outshooting the Camels 10-6 in shots on goal. The visitors' best chance came midway through the stanza when a wrister from Alana Burm (Hingham, Mass.) clanged off the post, just narrowly missing the back of the net.

In the third, the Camels were the aggressors, holding the offensive edge for the majority of the period. Kate Hagness (Madison, Conn.) nearly gave Conn the lead, but her slap shot also found iron and harmlessly deflected away. Despite a slew of shots from both teams toward the end of regulation, neither team could capitalize, and the game would be decided in a five-minute extra period.

Following a save from Leclair in the opening minute of overtime, Nevers took a pass from teammate Paige Kehoe and scored the game-winner to hand the Camels their fifth loss of the season.

Both goaltenders were outstanding throughout, with Leclair stopping 28 shots, while Wieczorek made 24 saves for Conn. The visitors' penalty kill unit was especially effective, stopping all five of Trinity's power play attempts.

Connecticut College (8-5 overall, 5-4 NESCAC) will play at Trinity again on Saturday to wrap up a two-game weekend set.
