HARTFORD, Conn. – For the second consecutive day, the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team fell to Trinity in overtime. The Bantams topped the Camels 3-2 on a score from Annabelle Merkel three minutes into the extra period on Saturday afternoon in Hartford.
Trinity completed the weekend sweep in dramatic fashion, winning on a walk-off goal on back-to-back days. Conn falls to 5-5 in NESCAC play as a result of the loss.
After the two teams combined for zero goals in 60 minutes of regulation time during Friday's contest, the first period of Saturday's game provided much more offense.
The Bantams went on the attack early, scoring just 1:23 into the opening frame on a rebound goal from Jenny Guider.
But the Camels responded just over a minute later. After passing in front of the blue line in the Trinity defensive zone, junior Rylie Griffith (West Hartford, Conn.) gathered a pass from teammate Alana Burm (Hingham, Mass.). Griffith fired a quick wrister that beat goaltender Hannah Leclair, who was screened during the attempt. The goal was the second on the season for the Camels defender and tied the contest at 1-1.
Not to be outdone, Trinity regained the lead six minutes later when the Bantams capitalized once again on a rebound. Following a save from goaltender Abby Wieczorek (Winnetka, Ill.), Guider was there to clean up the mess for her second score of the game. The Bantams would take the 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
Following a scoreless season period, the Camels were able to tie the game in the opening minute of the third on a near identical goal from the first period. Griffith once again took a wrist shot from the same location and scored her second goal of the game.
For the remainder of the third, the two teams battled for control of possession. Both the Bantams and the Camels killed off power plays in the final five minutes to force overtime.
In the three-on-three extra period, Trinity earned a breakaway with just one Camels player back on defense. Bantams forward Lillian Cassidy took a shot on goal that Wieczorek saved, but Merkel streaked in to put the rebound into the back of the net for the game-winner.
Leclair earned the victory for the Bantams, making 32 saves, while Wieczorek stopped 28 shots for Conn.
Connecticut College (8-6 overall, 5-5 NESCAC) will return home to host non-conference opponent Cortland on Tuesday, January 24.
