NEW LONDON, Conn. – In a dual meet that was decided by the final relay event, the Connecticut College men's swimming and diving team earned a 143-137 victory over Amherst College on Saturday afternoon at Lott Natatorium.
The Camels picked up 10 wins over the 16 events, none more important than the 200 free relay that clinched the overall team victory. Conn took a 132-131 lead into the final race, and the team of
Sean Geisler (New Paltz, N.Y.),
Justin Finkel (Cheshire, Conn.),
Mitchell Lockwood (Winchester, Mass.) and
Julien Legros (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) powered to the finish in 1:24.86, less than a second ahead of Amherst's top squad.
In addition to contributing to both relay wins, Finkel and Legros each picked up a pair of individual wins in the meet.
Matthew Laclef (Bethesda, Md.) and
Tadeusz Trzewik-Quinn (New Paltz, N.Y.) also claimed individual wins while
Kai Listgarten (San Mateo, Calif.) delivered max points in the diving competition.
After Conn opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, Amherst countered with first-place swims in the next four events. Finkel put a stop to that trend with a victory in the 200 fly (1:51.40), and Legros followed with a season-best time to win the 50 free (20.96). Legros later tacked on his second victory of the day in the 100 free (47.40), winning by a slim .57 seconds.
The Camels dominated the final four swimming events of the meet to seize control. Laclef swam to victory in the 500 free (4:47.13) while Finkel aced the 100 fly (50.38). Trzewik-Quinn then turned in his top time of the season to take home the 200 IM (1:56.66), setting the stage for the dramatic finish in the 200 free relay.
Prior to the meet, the Camels honored their seven seniors in a special ceremony. Geisler,
Dash Hunter (Westport, Conn.), Legros, Listgarten, Lockwood,
Marc Stern (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and Trzewik-Quinn all contributed points in the final home meet of their careers. [
