Matthews Scores Two Third Period Goals To Lead Women's Ice Hockey Past Nichols

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Kelly Matthews (Abington, Mass.) scored two third period goals, leading the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team to a 4-1 win over Nichols College on Tuesday night at Dayton Arena.

Despite trailing 1-0 through the first 47 minutes of regulation, the Camels scored four goals in the final period to earn the comeback victory.

The Bison won the opening frame, earning the first period's only goal. Grace Melanson was credited with the score for Nichols. Despite outshooting the visitors in the period, Conn could not capitalize on their chances and would head into the second period facing a 1-0 deficit.

The hosts were the aggressors in the middle frame, producing the majority of offensive action. Conn nearly tied the game midway through, but Abby Munger (Trinity, Fla.) fired a shot that hit off the crossbar and caromed back into play. The Camels outshot the Bison 17-6, but could not get an attempt by goaltender Victoria Bakopanos, who registered 31 saves through the first 40 minutes of regulation.

In the third, Conn finally got on the scoreboard. Matthews scored on a beautiful wraparound attempt, beating the diving Bakopanos to even the score at 1-1.

Nine minutes later, the Camels took the lead on Matthews' second goal of the game. After Alana Burm (Hingham, Mass.) intercepted the puck near mid-ice, the first year skated into the slot and dished a pass to Matthews who was streaking down the wing. The senior beat Bakopanos with a wrist shot to take the 2-1 lead.

Just 28 seconds later, following the ensuing face-off, Claire Sammons (Naperville, Ill.) scored off a rebound to extend the hosts' lead to two goals.

Morgan Bronstein (Pittsford, N.Y.) capped off the third period scoring spree, capitalizing on an empty net, to seal the 4-1 victory for Conn.

Despite the loss, Bakopanos was outstanding in net for the Bison, stopping 43 shots. Camels goaltender Eun-Bee Huh (Seoul, South Korea) made 18 saves while only allowing a single goal.

Connecticut College (10-7-1 overall) will next host non-conference opponent Manhattanville on Friday, February 3 at Dayton Arena. Action begins at 6 p.m.
