Women's Ice Hockey Edges Manhattanville 3-2

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Morgan Bronstein (Pittsford, N.Y.) scored a pair goals to propel the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team past Manhattanville 3-2 on Friday night at Dayton Arena.

With the victory, the Camels have now won three consecutive games and are 5-1 in non-conference contests this season.

The Camels were able to break through on the scoreboard with just over six minutes to go in the opening period. Kylie McCarthy (Dedham, Mass.) put a shot on net from inside the blue line that was saved by Valiants goaltender Franny Gerardi. But the attempt caromed directly onto the stick of Bronstein who put in the rebound for her third goal of the season, putting the hosts up 1-0.

With time winding down in the period, the Valiants were able to find the equalizer. Gabrielle Cox weaved through a pair of Camels defenders to earn a breakaway. After several dekes and a top shelf wrister, the forward beat goaltender Abby Wieczorek (Winnetka, Ill.) to knot the game at 1-1.

In the second period, the hosts regained the lead at the 14:28 mark. Bronstein once again capitalized on a rebounded shot from Kelly Matthews (Abington, Mass.) for her second goal of the game.

Just over one minute later, the Camels made it 3-1 when Melanie Conca (Nutley, N.J.) found the back of the net on a backhanded near-post score. Conca's goal marks her 12th of season, currently the third-highest total in the conference.

Midway through the final frame, Manhattanville pulled within one score. On the power play, Morgan Miller put in a one-timer from teammate Charlotte Stanwood.

For the remainder of the period, the Valiants desperately tried to tie the score. But Wieczorek and the Camels' back line held firm to seal the 3-2 victory.

Conn dominated in offensive opportunities, outshooting Manhattanville 55-14 in total shots. Wieczorek made 10 saves, while Gerardi stopped 34 attempts for the Valiants. Both teams committed three penalties. Manhattanville converted on one of its power play opportunities, while keeping the Camels off the board during their three attempts.

The win marked Conn's fourth straight triumph over the Valiants. The Camels have not lost to Manhattanville (10-10-1 overall) since 2015.

Friday's contest was sponsored by Conn's chapter of The Hidden Opponent (THO), a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness for student-athlete mental health. For more information regarding The Hidden Opponent, click here.

Connecticut College (11-7-1 overall) will wrap up its non-conference schedule on Tuesday, February 7 at Johnson & Wales.
