Men's Ice Hockey Routs Salem State 8-2

SALEM, Mass. – Junior Seth Stadheim (Lyme, N.H.) scored two goals and tacked on three assists to lead the Connecticut College men's ice hockey team to an 8-2 rout over Salem State on Tuesday night in Salem, Mass.

Conn tallied five goals in the first period and three in the third to down the Vikings (4-16 overall), avenging a 5-4 loss at home on Dec. 6. The victory also snapped an eight-game slide for the Camels.

The visitors got on the board early in the first period when Younghoon Choi (Seoul, South Korea) took a slap shot from inside the blue line. The initial shot was saved by Vikings goaltender Peter Barry. Brett Moccia (Lake Forest, Ill.) attempted a rebound shot, but it was deflected by a Salem State defender. Fortunately, the puck caromed to Kei Yasuda (Nagoya, Japan) who was able to put in the secondary rebound attempt to give the visitors the 1-0 lead.

Just over two minutes later, the Camels went on the attack again. Taking advantage of an odd man rush, Sean Detloff (Harrison Township, Mich.) delivered a stretch pass to Stadheim (Lyme, N.H.) down the right side of the ice. Stadheim skated toward the slot, and sent a centering pass to Rocco Testa-Basi (Holland Patent, N.Y.) who finished on the one-timer, putting Conn up 2-0.

Still in the first, the Camels earned a power play and capitalized on the man-advantage. Steven Ardagna (Roswell, Ga.) found open ice and delivered a near-post wrister, beating Barry to increase Conn's lead to 3-0.

Not done yet, the visitors tacked on two more to end the period. First, utilizing fantastic puck movement, Moccia found Stadheim on a slick pass through the crease and by a Vikings defender. Stadheim easily sent the wrister past the goaltender. Later, on the counter attack, Michael DiMascolo (Cranston, R.I.) and teammate Jack Luca (Milton, Mass.) dished the puck back-and-forth to each other setting up a rocketed, top shelf slap shot for DiMascolo. The onslaught on goals resulted in a 5-0 Conn lead after 20 minutes of play.

After the one-sided opening frame, the Vikings came out firing in the second. Zach Dill scored for the hosts just 28 seconds into the period to cut the lead to 5-1.

At the 13:01 mark of the second, Salem State converted on the power play for the team's second goal of the period. Erik Larsson was credited with the score for the Vikings. The visitors led 5-2 heading into the final stanza.

But any hopes of a comeback for the hosts ended in the third period. After taking a big hit in the Vikings defensive zone, Moccia regained his footing, gathered a pass from Devan Newhook (St. John's Newfoundland) and scored on a wrist shot for his first goal of the game.

Midway through the final period, Testa-Basi added his second score, converting a wrist shot off a rebound to bring the score to 7-2.

With less than four minutes remaining, the Camels went on the power play. The visitors once again capitalized on second chance opportunities, as Stadheim capped off the impressive scoring display with a rebound goal to seal the dominant 8-2 victory.

In addition to Stadheim's five-point game, Moccia added four points of his own. Defender Eric Fournier (Lethbridge, Alberta) tallied four helpers during the contest.

Goaltender Cam Fernandez (Fairfield, Conn.) played the majority of the game for the Camels, stopping 22 shots while allowing a pair of goals. Tim Pesek (Weston, Mass.) relieved Fernandez in the third period, tallying one save. Conn was effective on the power play converting three-of-five chances.

Connecticut College (3-15 overall) will next return to NESCAC action on Friday, February 3 at Tufts.
