Men's Ice Hockey Downs Tufts In OT For First NESCAC Win

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Devan Newhook (St. John's, Newfoundland) netted the game-winner in overtime to give the Connecticut College men's ice hockey team a 4-3 victory over Tufts on Friday night at the Warrior Ice Arena in Boston, Mass.

Following a 3-3 tie at the end of regulation, Newhook capitalized during the three-on-three extra period. After John Russo (South Windsor, Conn.) forced a turnover in the Jumbos' defensive zone, he passed up to teammate Anthony Quatieri (Peabody, Mass.). Quatieri ripped a wrist shot on net, but the deflected puck went straight to Newhook who slipped in the rebound goal, giving the Camels the victory.

The win marked the first NESCAC triumph for the Camels this season. Conn is currently riding a two-game win streak, making it the first time that the team has won back-to-back games during the 2022-23 campaign.

The two squads played an even opening frame for the majority of the 20 minutes, with the Camels slightly edging the Jumbos in shots on goal, 12-9.

But with time winding down in the first period, the Camels were able to break through on the scoreboard. Seth Stadheim (Lyme, N.H.) skated into the Tufts defensive zone and was forced to his left by a Jumbos defender. Stadheim fired a wrist shot from just outside the left face off circle. The attempt was perfectly placed, beating goaltender Peyton Durand to the near post, giving the Camels a 1-0 lead heading into the second period.

Halfway through the middle stanza, the Jumbos tied the score on a beautiful wraparound goal by Aidan Lovett.

Just under two minutes later, Tufts grabbed its first lead of the game. Mason Kohn threw a wrist shot on net that was stopped by Camels goaltender Cam Fernandez (Fairfield, Conn.). But the saved puck bounced right to Max Resnick who put in the rebound goal to give the Jumbos the 2-1 advantage.

Undeterred, the Camels answered right back. Quatieri skated up the right side of the ice into Jumbos' territory and dished a perfect centering pass to Russo who redirected the puck into the net, tying the score at 2-2.

Conn ran into penalty trouble to start the final stanza, earning two infractions early on. With the five-on-three advantage, the Jumbos peppered Fernandez with shots. But the junior goaltender stopped six shots in the two-minute sequence to keep the score even.

The Camels earned their own power play and at the 6:27 mark capitalized with the man-advantage. After a series of shots on net that were saved by Durand, Brett Moccia (Lake Forest, Ill.) cleaned up on a rebound, putting it past the Jumbos goaltender to give the visitors a 3-2 lead.

But the Jumbos responded with the equalizer just over four minutes later. Cole Debicki delivered a pass to defenseman Liam O'Hare who ripped a slap shot from inside the blue line, beating Fernandez and converting the one-timer.

With the game tied, both teams attempted to find the game-winner but neither could convert, sending the game to overtime.

During the extra period, the two teams battled for possession, but Russo forced the Jumbos turnover, setting up Newhook's heroics at the 1:45 mark.

The game was evenly played throughout with the visitors holding the edge in shots on goal, 39-35. Both teams earned four power plays each, but the Camels capitalized once with the man-advantage while holding the Jumbos scoreless in their four attempts.

Fernandez earned the victory between the pipes, stopping 32 shots, including 12 in the final period of regulation. Durand made 35 saves for Tufts (6-11-1 overall, 3-8-1 NESCAC).

Connecticut College (4-15 overall, 1-12 NESCAC) will return home to face off against the Jumbos on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m.
