Men's Ice Hockey Clips Tufts 6-4 At Home

NEW LONDON, Conn. – In front of a large crowd at a packed Dayton Arena, the Connecticut College men's ice hockey team pulled off a wild 6-4 victory over Tufts on Saturday evening.

The Camels completed the weekend sweep of the Jumbos, thanks to scoring sprees in the second and third periods. With the victory, Conn is now riding a three-game win streak heading into the final two weekends of NESCAC play.

In a physical first period, both squads battled back-and-forth for an offensive advantage. At the 16:21 mark, the Jumbos got on the scoreboard when Liam O'Hare connected with teammate John Mulvihill, converting on the one-timer and putting the visitors up 1-0.

The tide turned in a major way in the middle frame. Midway through the period, the Camels went on the counter-attack. As Brett Moccia (Lake Forest, Ill.) took the puck up the right side of the ice, he delivered a perfect pass to Younghoon Choi (Seoul, South Korea) in the slot, who crushed a slap shot into the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.

Just over two minutes later, Sean Detloff (Harrison Township, Mich.) calmly skated into the Jumbos defensive zone. The defenseman ripped a wrister into the top shelf, beating goaltender Gustave Bylin to give the Camels their first lead of the game.

Conn capped off its huge second period with a score coming off a power play. After several shots were saved by Bylin, the rebound found Rocco Testa-Basi (Holland Patent, N.Y.) who put in the loose puck to extend the hosts' lead to 3-1.

But with .1 seconds left on the clock, the Jumbos cut the lead back down to a score, after a wrister from Brendan Fennell got by Camels goaltender Cam Fernandez (Fairfield, Conn.).

Tufts built on its momentum early on in the final stanza. Following a Conn penalty, the Jumbos tied the score just two minutes in off a wrist shot from Sam Miller.

The Camels regained the lead several moments later when Moccia converted on a near-post wrister, just inside the right face-off circle to make the score 4-3.

At the 11:25 mark, the Camels capitalized on their third power play goal of the contest. Eric Fournier (Lethbridge, Alberta) took a slap shot from inside the blue line, directed towards Bylin. Testa-Basi was there to redirect the puck into the back of the net for the Camels' fifth score of the game.

The Jumbos were able to tally another goal to make it a 5-4 game, but an empty-netter by Choi sealed the two-goal win for the Camels.

Moccia and Testa-Basi led Conn with three points each. Choi scored a pair of goals, while Steven Ardagna (Roswell, Ga.) registered a pair of assists.

Fernandez earned the victory for the hosts, stopping 18 shots. Bylin made 25 shots for the Jumobs.

The Camels' power play unit was extremely effective, converting on three-of-five chances with the man-advantage.

Saturday's contest was sponsored by Conn's chapter of The Hidden Opponent (THO), a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness for student-athlete mental health. For more information regarding The Hidden Opponent, click here.

Connecticut College (5-15 overall, 2-12 NESCAC) will return to action on Friday, February 10 on the road against Hamilton.
