Men's Ice Hockey Loses High-Scoring Battle To Hamilton

CLINTON, N.Y. – The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team fell to Hamilton 8-5 in a wild, high-scoring contest. The Continentals scored four goals in the final period to earn the victory on Friday night at Russell Sage Rink.

The loss snapped a season-high three-game win streak for the Camels, while Hamilton extended its unbeaten mark to five in a row.

The opening period featured a combined five goals from the two squads. Just under one minute in, following a face-off win from Seth Stadheim (Lyme, N.H.) in the Continentals' defensive zone, Cole Eichler (King, Ontario) ripped a wrist shot on net. The attempt beat goaltender Jack Grant to give the Camels the lead.

Five minutes later, John Harrington (Braintree, Mass.) made it 2-0, scoring off assists from teammates Will Winship (Andover, Mass.) and Jack Luca (Milton, Mass.).

But the Continentals responded in a big way, scoring three consecutive goals to cap off a wild first period. Fred Allaire, Max Bulawka, and Grisha Gotovets were credited with the scores for the hosts.

The back-and-forth continued into the second period. Devan Newhook (St. John's Newfoundland) tied the game at 3-3 with his second goal of the season.

After a Cade Groton score put Hamilton back up by one, the Camels quickly found the equalizer when Eichler tallied his second goal off an assist from Rocco Testa-Basi (Holland Patent, N.Y.). The second period would conclude with a 4-4 tie, heading into the deciding final frame.

Just 17 seconds into the third, Conn scored its last goal of the game off the stick of John Russo (South Windsor, Conn.) to put the visitors up 5-4.

At the 11:15 mark, Hamilton tied the contest for the final time on a power play goal by Allaire. Three minutes later, Jackson Krock netted the game-winner, putting the Continentals up 6-5.

With time winding down, Conn pulled goaltender Cam Fernandez (Fairfield, Conn.) to utilize the extra attacker. But Hamilton was able to capitalize on the empty net, scoring two more times in the final minutes to seal the 8-5 victory.

Eichler led Conn with three points, while Allaire registered two goals and an assist for the Continentals.

Grant earned the win, stopping 22 shots. Fernandez made 25 saves for the Camels. The visitors were 0-2 on power play opportunities. Hamilton (12-8-1 overall, 10-4-1 NESCAC) converted one-of-three chances with the man-advantage.

Connecticut College (5-16-0 overall, 2-13-0 NESCAC) will wrap up the weekend road trip with a game against Amherst on Saturday.
