Comeback Bid Falls Short For Men's Ice Hockey Against Endicott

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team fell to No. 7 Endicott 2-1 on Saturday evening at Dayton Arena. After falling behind 2-0, the Camels scored in the final minute and their last second attempts to tie the score came up just short.

With the victory, the Gulls improved to 11-1 on the year and have now won 10 consecutive games.

For the majority of the opening period, the two teams were locked in a defensive battle. The Camels held the Gulls to just five shots on goal, while the stifling Endicott back line only allowed three.

With time winding down in the period, the Camels killed off a power play opportunity, but with less than a minute left, Endicott forward Noah Strawn took an open slap shot from just inside the blue line. Goaltender Cam Fernandez (Fairfield, Conn.) was screened during the process, and the puck beat him to his glove side. The Gulls would carry the 1-0 lead heading into the second.

Endicott built on the momentum from the end of the first period and immediately added to its lead when Jackson Sterrett earned a break away and fired a wrister that just got past Fernandez.

Despite the 2-0 deficit, the Camels played hard throughout the middle frame topping the Gulls 10-8 in shots on goal. But Conn could not take advantage of two power play opportunities and the score would remain 2-0 in favor of the visitors heading into the third period.

The two teams jockeyed back-and-forth for the majority of the third period, but both Fernandez and Endicott goaltender Ryan Wilson held their respective opponents off the scoreboard.

With just under two minutes left, Endicott was assessed a minor penalty. The Camels pulled Fernandez from net and utilized the extra attacker to gain the two-man advantage. After a shot that pulled Wilson out of the crease, Brett Moccia (Lake Forest, Ill.) gathered the rebound and found the back of the net to cut the Endicott lead to 2-1 with just under a minute left.

Despite a flurry of shots from the Camels in the final seconds, they could not find the equalizer and the Gulls would hang on for the one-goal victory.

Both goaltenders were fantastic throughout the contest. Wilson stopped 24 shots, while Fernandez made 15 saves for Conn. The Camels outshot the Gulls 25-17 and converted on 1-6 power play opportunities. Endicott was 0-2 with the man-advantage.

Connecticut College (2-9 overall) will next play NESCAC opponent Hamilton on Friday, January 13 at Dayton Arena.
