WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The Connecticut College field hockey team scored five goals in the second half en route to a 5-0 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday night at Rick McCarthy Field.
The Camels dominated from start to finish but didn't have anything to show for it after the first half. The floodgates finally opened in the third quarter, as Conn racked up three goals in a span of 4:27 to take control. The visitors added another pair of scores in the final period, giving them their highest single game total of the season.
Kylee Quinn (Sandwich, Mass.) scored a pair of goals to lead the attack.
Sydney Cresta (Swampscott, Mass.) recorded the game-winning tally, and
Phoebe Shane (Macungie, Pa.) and
Maddie Mason (Brentwood, N.H.) each notched the first goals of their collegiate careers.
Conn outshot Eastern 7-0 over the first 30 minutes but couldn't capitalize.
Katie Dolan (Westminster, Mass.) came close with a shot off the post in the second quarter, and Eastern goalie Veronica McKenna stopped a pair of shots on goal.
The trend continued in the third quarter when the Camels sprung
Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) for an open look down the right side. With McKenna out of position, McGann fired a shot on goal that was denied by a defender to keep the game scoreless.
Things changed moments later when Cresta put the Camels on the scoreboard with 8:29 remaining in the quarter. Dolan put a ball into the crease that was kicked away by McKenna, but Cresta quickly buried the rebound for her second goal of the season.
One minute later, Quinn made it a 2-0 game with her first tally of the night off a penalty corner.
McKalynn Jacobsen (Fairfield, Conn.) received the insertion at the top of the circle and slipped a pass to her right for Quinn, who sent a rocket into the lower-right corner of the goal.
The Camels added the third goal with 4:02 left in the period. After
Bridget Mason (East Greenwich, R.I.) fought through a scrum in front of the goal and fired a shot off the right post,
Maddie Mason tracked the rebound and swiped the ball over the goal line.
Eastern switched goalies in the fourth but it didn't slow Conn down. Quinn added her second goal of the contest—and third of the season—with a snipe off a penalty corner and assists from
Chloe Therrien (Boxford, Mass.) and
Rowan Galanis (Ipswich, Mass.). Later, some fancy stick work in front of the goal led to Shane's tally, which came off a feed from
Margaret Sadak (Glastonbury, Conn.).
Conn goalie
Liz Winemaster (Lake Forest, Ill.) didn't face a shot in 60 minutes of work and recorded her third shutout of the season. The Camels finished with a 17-0 edge in total shots and a 9-4 advantage in penalty corners.
Conn (3-7 overall) will next host Colby College on Saturday, October 14 at noon.
