Field Hockey Nabs First NESCAC Win

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College field hockey team earned its first NESCAC victory of the season on Saturday afternoon, topping Colby College by a 2-0 final at Silfen Field.

Elektra Rodger (Greenwich, Conn.) scored in the first quarter to put the Camels on top early, and Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) added an insurance goal in the second half. Goalie Liz Winemaster (Lake Forest, Ill.) finished with three saves to record her fourth shutout of the season.

Entering Saturday's game, Conn and Colby were an even 11-11 in head-to-head match-ups since 2000. The Camels improved to 4-7 overall (1-6 NESCAC) on the year and have now won two straight in the series.

After weathering a pair of Colby penalty corners in the opening six minutes, Conn settled in and began producing opportunities. With 4:40 left in the quarter, Katie Dolan (Westminster, Mass.) ripped a shot from the top of the circle that was slowed down by Colby goalie Emily Loeb. As the ball trickled toward the goal line, Rodger rushed in from the left side and poked it home for her second goal of the season.

The Camels had a good chance for another tally in the second quarter, but Loeb snuffed out a breakaway chance before a shot could be had. Conn, which allowed only one shot on goal in the half, was content to take the 1-0 lead into intermission.

McGann was quick to give the Camels some breathing room, notching her third goal of the season just 2:53 into the second half. She took a pass from Chloe Therrien (Boxford, Mass.) in the circle and fired a shot through traffic that beat Loeb to the right side.

Later in the third, the Camels put three shots on goal in a wild sequence, but Loeb denied every attempt to keep the Mules in the game. She finished with five saves in the contest.

Conn held a 13-7 advantage in shots and a 9-8 edge in penalty corners for the game. The Camels also recorded their fourth team shutout of the year, the most in a single season since 2017.

Conn will next host top-ranked and unbeaten Middlebury College on Sunday, October 15 at noon.
